If D&D can't be all things to all people, then that means some people are better off not playing D&D.
This thread seeks to identify people who shouldn't play D&D.

<snip>

Which preferences does D&D not cater to? Like if you want X out of TTRPGs, don't play D&D and go play some other game instead?
This is a bit weird to me, in two respects.

(1) I love backgammon, but it's not the only board-/card-type game that I play. So it is not all things to me, let alone all things to all people.

(2) I know some people who enjoy some whist-type ("trick taking") card games, but who don't enjoy five hundred. So five hundred is not all things to all people who enjoy whist-type card games. It is therefore, and more obviously so, not all things to all people who enjoy card games, or table-top games more generally.

D&D is a bundle of games that some people enjoy. Not everyone enjoys every part of the bundle. Some people don't enjoy any part of the bundle. I enjoy RPGs, and I enjoy some bits of the D&D bundle, but I don't envisage a lot of D&D in my future.

I can elaborate on why I don't see a lot of D&D in my future if you like, though my general experience is that explaining such things can make other posters, who do envisage a lot of D&D in their futures, a bit irritated. But the point of this post was just to express incredulity that anyone would expect the default to be that everyone who likes games, or fantasy, or RPGs, or all of the above, would therefore want to play D&D.

D&D is for everyone.
What does this mean?

Chess is not for everyone, in the sense that the world is full of people who have had the opportunity to play chess, have played it a bit, and who have chosen not to take it up as a game for them. (I am such a person).

Bridge is not for everyone. Seven Wonders is not for everyone. Napoleonic miniatures wargaming is not for everyone.

Why would D&D be any different?

Mindy. Mindy should not play Dungeons and Dragons. Mindy gets too stressed out by Dungeons and Dragons because she is so afraid her character will die. It's not fun for her. She likes creating characters but she doesn't want them to die. It is a cruelty to oneself to create something you love, then go put it into dangerous situations where it could die. Mindy, should not play Dungeons and Dragons.
Also, Mindy is a hamster. Her lack of higher reasoning and opposable thumbs make it difficult for her to play D&D.

A lot of conversations about this sort of stuff are weird to me.

I mean, here are two distinct questions:

(1) Ought there to be RPGs for players who don't want to experience unexpected setbacks and losses? Sure, why not?

(2) Ought WotC to publish such a RPG under the name "D&D"? Well, that's an entirely commercial question that no one in this thread really has much to contribute to answering.

I don't see any basis for answering either question with a capital "NOT".

They exist and are called Cozy RPGs.
