Why the resistance to the new(er) edition?

Carrot Top

First Post
I just got back from being on tour---all I can say is, I am tired. All those damn college towns and those 1-800 commercials, I do not have time to game anymore.

I took a gander at the boards and noted all the 3.0 vs 3.5 people and just wanted to say--can't we all just get along?

I remember when I was just a baby carrot top and we had older editions and some people got stuck in their edition but overall it seems to be getting better and better.

Just thought I would jump in and see what people are thinking now since most of you have it.

Ok back to coming up with bizarre props that I can pull out of a trunk and get paid lots of money to keep doing it---doesn' anyone want to see my on "NYPD Blue" or "Sex in the City"--my lucky d20 for a good role on TV.

Ok let me go and see what I can come up with for my act...I have a rubber hose, a fireman hat and a trumpet.

mmmmmmmmm.....

Its all about Change. People get used to certain things and then change comes along. People react badly sometimes.

Change can be good of course... but our first reaction will usually be skepticism, doubt or outright hostility. Why Change ? Why so much change ?

3.5 means dishing out money, time and dedication. Reading stuff again. The fact that it came pretty fast and that some of the changes were uncalled for or lets say not expected means bad reactions too.

2.0 to 3.0 was a clear leap in quality and necessary changes. 3.0 to 3.5 is not clearly so. The good changes are being swamped by many bad changes and bad editing too I feel. Since both systems are very much alike it will be a house ruling festival of what stays and what goes in the 3.5.

Besides... this forum is for discussion... and many people are still going thru the change or thinking of it. Its natural that some heated debating might go on.... especially since WOTC motives for 3.5 are clearly more financial than gaming. If 3.5 is good... it was still done for the money mostly. I am using this to figure out what our group should introduce fastly from 3.5....

I'm about to start a new campaign and I have made the choice to go 3.5. While I hate looking at the almost complete collection of WoTC D&D 3.0 products sitting on my shelf, I do not want to spend what little time I have (with work and school) to plan and play games on converting my 3.0 books to 3.5......Sure WoTC has put out a conversion manual, but Savage Species, Book of Vile Darkness, and the Arms & Equipment guide are not in it....It sucks that all of my books are invalidated by the new edition.

The cost of buying the new books, the wasted money on old books (if you don't want to take the time to convert), and the hassle of converting existing campaigns are probably why people are resistant to change editions.

That said, my 3.0 books are going into storage - my campaign will draw from only the three core 3.5 books and the new Dragonlance Campaign Setting book.

Reality check bro - this is not an expensive hobby by any standard. 60 or 90 bucks every three to five years is a bargain.

Hey CT:rolleyes: , good to see you returning to the boards.

Lets see, Firehouse Trumpet and a hat...

I thought I was becoming over exposed and thought it might hurt my career, so I stepped back from the lime light and tried to put that fire out (Hose and hat).

That worked better than I thought, now I can barely keep the 1-800, (looking at heckler) go F*** yourself. Come up on stage and I will shove this trumpet up your A$$.

Hey I'm no comedian

In the last thread this CT was pretty darned funny

Hmmm. 60 to 90 bucks plus conversion hassles on many largely dubious changes to a system that was fundamentally working and could have gone a few more years without changes is not a bargain.

That's okay. WotC has been gracious enough to post the SRD promptly, and fans and companies have been nice enough to assemble nice little docs for those of us who want to just cherry pick. Now that's a bargain!

Reality check bro ?!?!?
Try re-reading my post. I never said it was an expensive hobby....I just said that buying the books was an 'expense' some people don't want. You'll notice from my post that I bought the books. Some people don't feel the need to spend $65 - $100 bucks, which addresses the original question.
