I would like to see a more varied tradition of D&D artwork crop up with the new edition than have the artwork in 4e simply fall to old ways a la the chainmail bikini.
Have a hunt through the thread for the pics posted by Voadim and Klaus. I was impressed.

The "arcane" class act shows Mialee, reading a book. Now, while this picture isn't all that "sexy", that's just because of her pose. Remember what Mialee looks like in general - flowing hair, and definate cleavage.

Mialee is not what i would call an example of feminine beauty. I don't know what your talking. In general Mialee looks androgynous.

It's all the context of the work that we're really talking about.

In the context of D&D, I would like the female adventurers to look competent.

They can look attractive and sexy at the same time, but I would like them to exude a basic sense that they are good at their job. Chain-mail bikinis kind of fall into incompetent side of things.

Also, you don't need to show flesh to look good. If you play WoW, a female human paladin in full Judgement armor is (in my opinion) the best looking character in the game. ( http://www.wowwiki.com/Image:Apaladin-tier-2.jpg )

One point that is often missed in these discussions is that a woman can be hot without impractical skimpy clothing. "chainmail bikinis vs ugly characters" is a false dichotomy. Any artist who can't make a female character look good without turning her into a cheesecake model shouldn't be illustrating.

Its all in the face, the facial expression and the pose really.

Comparing apples and airplanes.

Those people are offended by the presence of demons being in the books in the first place. Fighting demons is a staple of fantasy and they have a very legitimate reason for being in the game.

Whereas being offended by art depicting women in clothing they would never wear for fear of being stabbed in the breasts or thighs where nice vital organs, has no other purpose than attracting teenage boys.

Removing the cheesecake effects nothing. Removing the demons effects a lot of things.
In either case, you're playing to an audience. One audience wants attractive heroes to relate to, and the other wants scary monsters to fight. One group of detractors thinks that anyone who wants attractive heroes is a perv, and the other group of detractors thinks that anyone who wants demons in the game is an occult lunatic.

I also feel the need to point out that the current round of this particular flavour of hysteria is based on the appearance of one piece of art. This is hardly the march of the sexual predator D&D clansmen.

There's also people who are offended by the demons. They're turned off immediately too. What should we do about them?
Sacrifice them to Asmodeus, obviously. Sheesh, get with the program.

Or yeah, feed them to the [fiendish dire] lions.

Once More.

No one is saying that Cheesecake must end, throw a burkha over those hot elves.

I just wanted to say that I agree with this 100%. To me attractive + dynamic + competent makes for the best female art, and the best male art as well.
