Compare these two pictures:

Does the one on the left take anything away from the one on the right?

Does the one on the right add anything to the picture at all?

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Well done, Rechan.

i don't think you need to be 60 years old to have the kind of feelings i have to the old masters of fantasy art.
... but if you are 60 years old, you need more of that kind of art to "get the sword sharp", IYKWIM(AITYD).

about the picture. The silver and skin tone actually make the composition more active. *edit*. I guess it depends if you want the figure to stand out, or blend it with the background. Is she the primary focuses of the cover? It would have to be judged looking at the whole composition, not just a corner section.

Thats just my immediate impression. Do you happen to have higher rez versions at higher quality?

The one on right looks more visually interesting to me. The contrast between steel and (attractive) flesh is eye-catching.

But then again, when it comes to sword & sorcery I like a little sexy with my violence.

Uh, Steve?

In the Races Chapter, there's a picture that shows a female version of all the races in nothing but their bra and pants.

Yeah, the next page has men bare chested or in shirts, but that's not intented to tittilate.
Yes, I actually have seen that. The races are drawn in the same fashion, which was called DaVinci style at the time. The important thing is that they're drawn in the same style, and they include all of the races, including the half orc. Half orc cheesecake? Doubtful.

If the attempt was to titillate, it didn't work...it didn't even come close. I think this is an example of people protesting too much. Now if the women characters had been wearing frilly underwear or fetish gear, you might have a point, but I'm going to have to call Shenanigans on this one.

The left one looks more competent, and cooler for me.

Keep in mind, it was not the original artist (Wayne Reynolds) who did the left re-work, but somebody on the Wizards message board who only had the right image with that bad resolution.
And he admitted not being a professional at all, only doing this with photoshop to illustrate.

Why, then, the assumption that the female version is? I find that assumption easily as sexist as a theoretical (and not demonstrated) inclusion of tons of cheesecake and no beefcake would be.

The races pictures are wearing the minimal clothing for modesty specifically to demonstrate physical differences between average members of the races. The female outfits in those pictures struck me more like bathing suits or athletic exercise outfits than like bras.
