Hard magic systems have clear rules about how they work; they are predictable. Soft magic has no clear “system” and tends to lack any kind of connection between one spell and another—more or less random, certainly chaotic.
The dystopian Korean series Squid Game is popular on Netflix, building on a genre of survival horror involving contests of skill. Thanks to the lethal nature of the contest, it can easily be tweaked for role-playing games.
This week includes a boxed DMless D&D adventure as well as a book of encounters. Modiphius has a special Dune rulebook and support for Conan. There are RPGs about the supernatural American colonies as well as RPGs from Dapper Fish Designs, Horseshark Games, and Arion Games ranging from post-apocalyptic to detective investigation to fantasy.
This week I look at RPG crowdfunding projects that end between November 23rd and December 3rd. It is that time of year when many projects are quickstarters and the new projects are fewer and further between. That noted, these aren’t all of the projects available, but what we have are in the order of their end date. Some of them were inspired by Side Quest 2021, a November initiative to give...
This week is good for tieflings, goblins, and punks. D&D has a supplement with new rules, tieflings, and reprinted character sheets and Old-School Essentials also gets a supplement with new rules along with an adventure. HarnWorld gets locations and Mothership gets new pamphlet supplements. Finally, there is support for punks and a newly updated one player RPG.
This week, I review Kickstarters and quickstarts that end between November 14th through December 2nd. While there’s plenty of fantasy and 5e, this week sees a nice uptick in sci-fi RPGs including one that’s likely to join the million dollar club before its campaign is over.
The dastardly Philip Reed is creating new tabletop RPG content. Again. This crime… er, time, he’s creating Mimics, An Unnecessary Work. This Kickstarter will fund foldable pocket maps “designed as a completely worthless collection of ideas that gamemasters may turn to when tossing a mimic into their next dungeon.” Starting with two pocket maps, the first is about mimics, the second is about...
D&D has dragons and adventures, and Castles & Crusades has options for GMs, about gods, and valuable materials PCs can find. Soulbound gets a monster book and DCC RPG gets a reprint of a run of zines. Starship Warden sees two supplements and Feng Shui 2 gets two adventures. Finally, Gaming Paper has new gridded blank battle maps.
Jon Peterson's thorough retelling of the origins of Dungeons & Dragons is less about the game and more about the two men who helped create it: Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Their fraught relationship haunts every page as the two wage a “great war,” lining up friends and allies that would go on to influence Origins, GAMA, Gen Con, Avalon Hill, and so much more.
Lots of D&D, fantasy, and sci-fi RPG options this week. The Southlands is an entire campaign setting for D&D with support for both the DM and the players. There are brand new spells on spell cards, a monstrous spider mini and supporting adventure, and even a D&D dice rolling tray. ARC is a unique fantasy RPG with a doom clock to make it a race against time and in Tunnels & Trolls PCs can now...
So much d20 fantasy this week including a new world and kingdom event cards for D&D, spell cards for Pathfinder, and Lankhmar and adventures for DCC/MCC RPG. Also, Stargate SG-1 RPG is out and uses the OGL derived from D&D. Deadlands gets a cattle drive from hell adventure and City of Mist and Zombicide Chronicles get supplements. And there is a new world and a new city to explore via new...
Fantasy gets an infusion of books this week and a couple of sci-fi options make the list. A lot of third party D&D options: a magical library, magical tattoos, a heavy metal adventure path, a book of NPCs. Ruin Masters is back, this time with two adventures, and Shadowrun gets a book of Mr. Johnson patrons. Torg Eternity and Dungeon Fantasy also return with accessories to help GMs run...
This week, I look at content that ends between October 10th and the 28th. I’m turning this one in early due to travel to Origins Game Fair so it, like all of the articles, is just a sampling of what’s available.
This week, I look at RPG crowdfunding projects ending between October 1st and 21st. Among the many options available, I look at two Alan Bahr related projects, one that Free League is elevating, a group of artifacts for the gaming table, a few holiday adventures, and more.
This week, I look at a sampling of the available RPG crowdfunding projects that end between September 23rd to October 31st. In the article, there are some strong 5e offerings, Mothership adventures, two game stores, and more. As always, I can’t cover every RPG crowdfunding at the moment, so I encourage you to check out Kickstarter, GameOnTabletop, IndieGoGo, and GameFound for more projects.
When Kickstarter’s ZineQuest 2021 was rolling, Tony Vasinda shared my RPG zine on his show. I was elated and picked up a quote from him for my project. When he announced his new project, Down We Go, I was curious about it and the site he chose to crowdfund it on, GameFound. Tony was good enough to answer my questions about his old school rule lite RPG including who is working on it, how the...
