D&D 5E 5E classes that discourage "dipping"

Another way to put this might be, "Which capstone abilities are so desirable that they deter you from dipping into another class?" But sometimes you don't even look that far ahead. Sometimes it's just "What do I want next?"

I realize that this is very subjective, and dependent on HOW you play a character. For example, I have a paladin that doesn't use weapons that pierce or slash (no points or edges). I'm tempted to dip into warlock for Eldritch Blast, but I keep finding excuses/reasons to stay with Paladin.

Anyone else feel like that?

Related questions might include, "Is there a class that you'd likely NEVER dip into?" if you were already Class ABC or "Is there a class that REQUIRES dipping to be worthwhile?"

All of them. Sorry if that sounds flippant, but as I progress in levels, there's always a good reason to keep in the class I already am.

For the record, I do not plan levels ahead. I go by what has happened in the game and makes the most sense for how I want the character to evolve. I rarely multiclass anyway, but with 5e I find it extremely rare. Probably only 10% of my PCs have multiclassed

I'm currently playing an arcana cleric, and my original intention was to take a 1-level dip into wizard to get some more utility spells and cantrips, but so far I've just found that I'd rather take another level of cleric. I'm currently at 4th level and at 5th I get access to 3rd level spells, including spirit guardians. At 6th, I get Spell Breaker.

I normally like multiclassing, so this is something of a first for me.

I think the fact that "to dip or not to dip" is generally a very hard choice to make is a sign that they did multiclassing right this edition.

Also, capstone is a moving target. Most games never make it to 20th level. But there's always a virtual capstone. If a game ends at 11th level, for example, spellcasters saw access to 6th level spells as their capstone. And fighters capstone was their third attack. And so on.

Best dips
Cleric
Fighter
Warlock
Barbarian
Rogue

Bad Dips
Wizard
Druid
Bard
Ranger
Paladin
Monk

Now this isn't to say there aren't multiclass combinations that work even with the bad classes, but there's generally very little reason to dip into any of the above classes I've labeled as Bad Dips.

I consider 5+ levels in a class to be NOT A DIP

I agree with you that the original Ranger is a bad dip, but the Revised UA Ranger seems pretty decent for a dip.

And all opinions on my original question are valid. I'm just looking for feels. I had a "plan" when I created my character, but as time went on, that plan didn't seem right from a character standpoint. I still want the abilities Warlock will give me, but on a level by level basis, I'm willing to give them up.

Very strange experience for me as a player.

Yeah, but it hasn't been fine-tuned for multiclassing yet. I bet the next time we see the revised ranger, it won't be so front-heavy.

I am currently playing a druid. The druid capstone is so powerful that unless you know you aren't hitting 20, stay a druid.

I think monk is a class that discourages dipping, not so much because the capstone is amazing, but because every level gives ki, you need ki to do all the cool stuff monks can do, and it remains relatively scarce (you never have a huge surplus of it).
