D&D 5E Damage on a missed attack roll

Decisive Attack
When you make a melee weapon attack on your turn, you can expend one superiority die to deal an extra X damage to the target. If you miss, the target still takes this extra die of damage.
I'll quibble that it doesn't sound decisive, at all. And as a pure DPR benefit, it'd have to stack up to precision strike.

But it's a reasonable sort of idea.
When I first saw it I also thought it wouldn't compete with precision strike. I'm thinking more like this:

Decisive Attack
When you make a melee weapon attack on your turn and spend one superiority die on that attack, you can expend one additional superiority die. The target takes this extra die of damage and the affect of the first maneuver regardless of whether the attack hits or misses.

It's a specific exception to the one maneuver per attack rule, but it costs an additional maneuver known plus gives something interesting.

the idea of expanding multiple attacks or multiple maneuver/superiority dice were floated during play test.

That does sound more decisive.

"Decisive" sounds just fine to me. It's very useful for guaranteeing damage to finish off badly injured targets and mooks. That's a property beyond mere DPR math (although Precision Strike is also good in the same circumstance).

just not with that suggested manuever
There was a hunter maneuver in 4e ... that allowed one to kick out a snapshot volley... which attacked multiple enemies in a 15x15 area. up to 9, i thought it needed an option to focus fire those where one of the damn things was bound to hit (they are all weak attacks and it may be that multiple hit on a good roll and only 1 on poor roll. Damage on a miss might represent such a volley focus fired.

In other words it wouldn't have to be limited to a melee attack to have a blur of hard to stop wicked jabs. (but you might go through a lot of ammo)
