They'll be using it to reveal stuff about upcoming D&D projects (including video games and entertainment). The video will be presented by Anna Prosser and B. Dave Walters.

This is being billed in an emailed announcement entitled "Learn Everything That’s Happening This Year for Dungeons & Dragons" as the "first ever D&D Direct", so presumably there are more planned.

If each item gets only 3 minutes, and the rumor of 30 minutes total is true, that's ten major items. Basically 3 per "section" - game, entertainment, vidya games

Some stuff might get less them 3 minutes depending on what it is, like new t-shirts or a dice set won't take 3 minutes. I think they will explore what is announced separately after D&D Direct in more detail, maybe right after.

I've heard people mention that they still use the 4e essentials rules for the board games, but I've never played one and can't comment, other than passing along the rumor.
I know the boardgames published during 4E were 4E or later Essentials, I don't know about boardgames that have been published since.
Yup, the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure System board games are an adaptation of 4E combat and powers rules, starting with Wrath of Asherdalon (sp?) and Castle Ravenloft. Tomb of Annihilation and Dungeon of the Mad Mage use the same 4E rules, but tie into 5E storyline and fluff. Dunno if they are making any new ones moving firwards at this point.
