I think the fact that bad action franchise films can score such big bucks is a contrast to art house films. Film D'Auteur have to be good to net a large return and are almost entirely unknown if bad. So, action films in comparison have a much larger gulf between the good ones and the bad ones. I mean, you just insinuated that Highlander 2 and Robocop 3 are bad, but there is much worse out there. To me, those films are already the bottom. Critics have to weigh Lord of the Rings against Your Highness or Star Wars against Pluto Nash. The action genre is packed with examples at all ranges of the critical spectrum. You cant simply say I really like emo-goth vampires better than Supers. I mean, subjectively you certainly can, but objectively you have to measure the films on their execution as well to make a fair assessment. I don't think you are doing this, and certainly don't appreciate that critics have to.![]()
Well Highlander 2 has become a punching bag for bad films but I remember watching worse and apparently the made for TV Steven Seagal movies are terrible.
I was 22 or 23 when original F&F came out. I knew some younger boy racer types who absolutely loved it. I didn't see it on its original run but the first was a lot better than expected..
Its more aimed at a specific audience vs bad its like the rom com genres stereotype fan base. There's bad movies like Highlander 2 then there's stuff aimed at specific audiences that you'll probably hate if you're not part of that audience.
Critics tastes lean heavily towards specific genres and the cocktail and wine crown in LA vs rest of country let alone world.
Plenty of critical darlings flop because they don't resonate with wider audiences. IDK of a D&D movie will but thus thread us purely about the box office not critic scores or if you personally liked the movie or not.
It could easily be a critical darling and flop or get middling scores and be a smash hit idk.
They go on about D&Ds diversity but from what I'm seeing they've only expanded it certain demographic it still leans heavily into college educated types here that's 25% of the population.
