Planescape Manual of the Planes for 5e on DMSGuild

New on the DMSGuild is the Manual of the Planes for 5th edition. The cover is stunning.

Manual of the Planes. An invaluable, definitive work on the most fascinating aspect of the World's Greatest Roleplaying Game

It's over 300 pages and the credits page includes folks from The Draconomicon, The Dragonlance Companion, Tasha's Crucible of Everything Else, Planescape: Metropolis, The Honkonomicon and Planewalker.com

I love the special thanks.

This project was made possible by Roll20. Thank you for unlocking new horizons for the latest generation of planewalkers, bashers, berks, and touts. We’d also like to thank the giants on whose shoulders we stand when writing this book: Justice Ramin Arman, Richard Baker, Wolfgang Baur, David “Zeb” Cook, Bruce R. Cordell, Jeff Grubb, David Noonan, F. Wesley Schneider, Rick Swan, and all others who helped create and cultivate Planescape and the planes.

I've just bought it and am reading it now.

Here is the table of contents.

Wait, $30(!!!) for a PDF with NO ART? Did I hear that right?

I can buy fully illustrated PDFs for half the price on DTRPG. I can buy fully illustrated HARDCOVERS for $30.

I'm all for fair pricing of RPG materials... but that's pushing it a bit, isn't it? Isn't the art the expensive bit usually used to justify the cost of a PDF?

And there's people trumpeting how much better value this is than WotC's stuff?

I can't bring myself to buy this. Somebody please tell me I've misread something, and this isn't a book with no art at all? Because if it is, I'm in the wrong line of business!

I only have access to the first 17 pages, but besides very little art in it, but honestly I don't care. I admit the price is high for a PDF with as far as I can tell little art, BUT it's filled to the brim with actual content/lore/mechanics instead which is more important. Later parts may have maps I don't know. It may have a high price because it has alot of writers.

Writers are artists too and should be paid. Especially good writers creating good content

Not sure what you mean by "in the wrong line of business", but have you really not heard of a book with no art in it?

I don't think you heard it correctly. I don't have the book, and I said there was no art in the preview. In response to my comment one of the authors said they would have liked to have had more art, which suggests to me there is some art. I would need someone who has purchased the product to verify the amount art content.

Ah, apologies for the lack of clarity. I can confirm that apart from some decorative elements to brighten the pages up, there is no art in the book.

Everyone has their own view on things. I still might purchase this, but it would probably be an instant purchase if this had a bunch of good art. For me, if I only had $35 to spend, I would rather spend it on the DnD Beyond Planescape books than $30 on this PDF and pocket 5 bucks. And the primary reason for that would be the vast amount of inspiring art in the WotC product.

Thank you for clarifying. I wish I had more free time. Would totally be down with creating/commissioning art for this project on the cheap. But I could really only get to that some time around 2025! Heck, my personal style/ability wouldn't be to far off Tony's original works!

Appreciate the thought, and as far as purchasing decisions go, I'd rather be up front with potential readers about what is and is not included in the book. The table of contents provides a good look at what it does include. I do quite enjoy inspiring art myself - whether it's old Erol Otus sketches or fantastic multi-layered full-colors. Sadly, my own artistic talents are definitely better served painting the canvas of the mind.
