D&D (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

while the food/water tracking could be discarded with little harm to them i think the real killing blow to exploration ranger is the lack of like, overland hexcrawl navigation, being able to ensure the party is not veering off course and thinking they're in a different hex to where they actually are, finding safe havens to be able to long rest in in the wilds and scavenging herbs to whip up healing potions in the interim, passing nature and survival checks to know how to deal with or avoid environmental hazards to conserve resources.
Expertise is Survival is 1 feature, which they have.

That's not a whole class. Not in 5e anyways.

They could always bring back Favored Foe. It does have a number of advantages over Hunter's Mark IMO.
Favored foe sucks..

It's just that you traded it for a feature that in most campaigns didn't work. So it technically was free at those tables.

It's like when someone promotes a new nasty energy drink on the street and hand out free samples. You only tolerated because it's free.

It is better than Hunters Mark as a class feature IMO, better both mechanically and thematically.

I've liked the idea of Rangers being able to ignore components for their spells. Other casters have to supplement that lack of intuition and instinct by speaking coded phrases and signing in the air.

wow it's almost like if there was better overland mechanics and challenges you'd be able to make more ranger skills matter and give them more abilities.
To see if it would make sense to have hunters mark not use any.
i think you've crossed conversational wires, HM was never a notable point in removing V components for rangers, but S and M components don't subvert your stealth in the same way V ones do, but you could already achieve 'componentless' spells with the sorcerer, using subtle spell on absorb elements (just S) or silvery barbs (just V) so i don't think it would be some major upheaval if the ranger ended up doing it on some select V-only spells too.

Are you going to add a lock picking mini game for the rogue too?
