Plus they made a point of showing just how handy she is with technology, especially Jerri rigging it.
Jerri Rigging, named after the Seven of Nine actress because she's known for being able to jury-rig Borg tech into any problem VOY encountered?

I absolutely despised the slide into "Borgwatch", when Seven-of-Nine joined the cast. Then, on later viewings, I realized that her episodes were some of the best.
She's a new character suddenly shoved into everything, taking away time from the beloved (maybe?) other characters, only because they wanted to add a role with sex appeal putting her in these ridicilous costumes (which don't really fit my ideals of sex appeal, but whatever).
But goddamn it, Jery Ryan could (well, still can, going by Picard) act - And the writers actually knew what to do with her character, unlike so many other members of the part (besides the Doctor).

Without Discovery, there is no Strange New Worlds. Literally, season 2 is pretty much a test bed for SNW, as we get Pike, Spock and Number One there. And after Voyager and Enterprise both being poor copies of TNG, I give Disco a lot of grace for trying new things. Was it completely successful? No. But it never was as dire as a lot of Enterprise or Season 1 of TNG.

As for this episode, yeah, it's Enemy Mine. Which is fine, I thought it did that well. Glad to see Ortegas get her due.

Picard season 3 was pretty good. But the first 2 seasons, especially the second drag that average WAY down.

I haven't watched Picard season 2 yet, only S1 and S3.

But, lemme tell ya, Mecha-Space-C'thulhu from Beyond the 5th Dimension there in Season 1? Not impressive. A bit too on the nose of "deus ex machina".

I really liked Discovery. I think it did a good job capturing the optimism of Star Trek. Quibble all you want about the implausibility of a mycellium network spore drive and all that. It still FELT like Star Trek to me.

So, I have no problem with Disco season 1.

But... while I give Trek loads of leeway on its science.... one kid growing up around a lot of dilithium destroys pretty much all the dilithium in the galaxy, instantaneously, because he gets scared once? That was just too frelling goofy to bear.

There is a point where, despite nominal "optimism", the show became an incessant grind of each and every character suffering. They have only a few episodes, and a large cast, and they all must have DRAMA... it was a bit much, and took itself a bit too seriously, until it just wasn't fun any more - right around where they felt the suffering just wasn't big enough, so they genocide Book's entire freakin' planet!

And I don't think Burnam was anywhere near ready for the Captain's chair. They had a good thing of having the main protagonist not be the captain for once, and then ruined even that.

In the end, Mariner is a better Burnam than Burnam ever was.
