D&D 5E (IC) Rise of the Dracolich

Lorenn flew off on his board and by the time the others were working their way through the pass between two icy peaks, he'd circled most of the double-iceburg island. It was a clear day and very cold when exposed to the higher air currents. The sea reflected the sun and was very bright - the stark white of the iceburg brighter still. His eyes grew sore from the glare and his nose grew red and lost all feeling. At one point, he thought he saw a man standing on a high ledge, but when he went closer to investigate, there was no one there at all.

When he reached the far shore, he saw a small cluster of kayaks (very like the ones that Loklafd used) far off among the iceburgs to the north. They appeared to be humans fishing with nets but he would have to cross open water to know for sure. In the distance, perhaps six miles or more, loomed an enormous iceburg; diagonally sloped with a sheer cliff on one side. It's highest peak must have been at least two hundred feet out of the water. It matched the description of Oyaviggaton - a word that meant "home of ice forever" or "lair of eternal freezing" or something similar.

Lorenn landed on the deck, blowing into his frozen hands. "Th-there-there-is-a-a-man-scout-hid-hiding-may-maybe-am-amb-ambush."

Kalorn's grunted in surprise. "An ambush? Here of all places?!? Maybe it's just a shipwreck survivor. Ah well, let's go check it out."

"Survivors usually don't hide, they call for help and this valley looks like a big trap to me. Furthermore, at a few miles behind those peaks, I could see an iceberg matching the description of Oyaviggaton ... and more of those men. So yeah, maybe it's a particularly good fishing spot buuut... I really have a bad feeling about this."

Mord watched the crew haul the ship onto the ice with some respect. The will and ingenuity of man could do some things which his magic could not duplicate yet. But he intended to change that in time.

Turning to Fradak, "Then we had best go trigger this trap. The ship will be vulnerable out of water and we can't afford to be left stranded here."

The horse he summoned this time seemed to be made from packed snow. And with another spell cast, the Warlocks image changed to match.

OOC: It's not invisibility, but maybe it'll give him advantage on stealth checks?

The group set off across the brightly-lit snow, expecting to find some sort of ambush. They were not surprised by the event, when it occurred, but they had not expected the nature.

They were travelling through a part of the pass where the ice-cliffs of the two burgs narrowed together and Primus could feel terrible anger and madness as a man-shaped form appeared on the cliff above them. The man raised a hand and the ice beneath them shifted slightly as something very large loomed under it. As the group spread out, a creature burst through the ice - a whale! It's long, twisted tooth swung about like a mighty sword as its partially-skeletal head emerged through the hole it had punched in the ice of the path.

Then the man brought his hand down, and a crack appeared in the cliff-face, and the skeleton of a frost giant broke free from icy imprisonment and hefted an enormous axe. Finally, two more man-sized creatures appeared on the cliffs above them. By this time though, Imani's Agents had already sprung into action...

OOC: Sesto and Kalorn are in difficult terrain, and need to roll a dc12 strength save to avoid sliding into the whale's hole. The Wights are 30 feet up the cliffs, which require a dc16 climb check to move up and are difficult terrain. Of course, you can just fly up.

OOC: Two questions regarding spells "pre cast"

1: I was going to cast Armor of Agathys for this scouting trip as it lasts a while, but I didn't get the chance to declare it... so did I? (if you rule no that's ok)

2: More importantly, do we have water walk from Sesto?

OOC: This should be ooc. I thought it was when I replied...

2: More importantly, do we have water walk from Sesto?

1: Sure.

2: I can't imagine why he would have cast water walk. You are walking on solid ice. I mean, sure, it would help you if you fell into the Narwhal's hole, but you had no reason to expect that would happen. I think it would have most likely been wasted, but if you want to argue otherwise, I'll certainly consider it.

OOC: I agree… Sesto would only cast Water Walk if anyone fell in the water or if the group was planning to walk on water. Not as a preventative measure.
