(IC) Against the Giants PBP Group 2

The group made their way up the tall cellar steps, with Donnell helping those who struggled (Gimlak, too, occasionally telekinetically levitated a troubled climber). When they reached the top of the stairs, at an empty guard room, they could hear the sounds of shouts and hammering on the big main doors.

It seemed incredible, but Captain Caine's siege was still underway!

OOC: I had my son play Captain Caine & his troops to see how it went. I am as surprised as you that he is not, in fact, dead. I hope that he doesn't disappoint any of you by stealing some of your thunder. I will give details when you have a chance to speak to him. Caine, I mean.

KEY: 1) You Are Here. 2) You left Caine attacking the gates here, though it seems his forces are now in the southern courtyard. 3) For Snarf, this is where you chopped off the Chief's head! 4) The Watchtower. 5) The Great Hall (it seems to be barricaded). 6) The Kitchens. 7) The North Courtyard, where you assaulted the place.

When you say the Great Hall is barricaded, do you mean that entrances that we see? The two doors on the western side facing us.
OOC: Well, you haven't actually checked them yet, but yes. The giants in the great hall have decided that they have no idea where all these "Smalls" are coming from, and at this point it seems that they're positively seeping through the walls. The giants have moved all that junk you can see on the map (crates and barrels). ALL OF IT. To cover every door. Primarily the main door to the south, yes, but also the one across from you. The one on the Western wall, but to the south, leads to a hallway that leads to the southern courtyard. They have no access to that one, and you could use it to get to Caine.

OOC: Is there a north gate? If not, can we get a ladder and let the slaves hop the walls to escape? North should be clear now

OOC: Edit: looks like Fitz posted just before me. After reading his post, maybe we just rendez-vous with the attacking force by using that south corridor then we can help with the attack, if need be - once the slaves are safely behind our forces.

OOC:
@TaranTheWanderer Looking at the map, let's get the people out- the door on the east wall (facing us) that is to the south leads to the Courtyard and would let them get to Caine and out.

We could then move North and across, and use the non-barricaded entrance to the NW of the Great Hall to hit 'em.

Donnell listened at the door and motioned for people to wait as he checked out the next room. It was abandoned but he could hear a ruckus through the west door to the great hall. Moving south, he peeked through another door to the west which led to a hallway. Beyond, he could hear the cries and orders of non-giants - likely Cain's forces. He went back and reported his findings to the group.

"We might be able to slip everyone past, straight to the invasion force. It looks like Cain has taken the courtyard."

If you need it. I'll edit if there are enemies in the adjoining rooms.

Donnell scouted the way forward, quickly assessing where things stood, both friend and foe. When the way seemed safe and clear, the group led their charges down toward the guard's entrance. This hall was essentially a sally-port, but with the size of the giants, it was big enough for all involved.

When the door to the courtyard was opened, a voice shouted, "Be ready, here they come!" before being cut off by another shout of, "Hold off! It is the Adventurers!"

There was a chorus of cheers. Donnell got the doors open, revealing a pile of bodies - Hill Giants and Ogres. Caine, though wounded, was on horseback, commanding what was now a small force of footmen and pikemen.

He'd lost slightly more than two-thirds of his sixty men, but even with such terrible losses, spirits were high with their victory so-far. The most significant of which revealed itself as the bodies were pushed aside or climbed over - in a similar pile in front of the matching door to the east, lay the unmistakable body of an armored Fire Giant.

Smolderheart was dead.

OOC: Some ideas for y'all to consider. Gimlak and the Colonel can repeatedly cast mold earth to create tunnels out for the rescued prisoners to flee. Ditto to attack the great hall. And Gimlak can make 3 people fly, but that'll use up his concentration. An amusing thought would be to get a summoned earth elemental to fly (@Kobold Stew). @FitzTheRuke, can you adjudicate whether the mould earth gambit is feasible or not?

@FitzTheRuke, can you adjudicate whether the mould earth gambit is feasible or not?
OOC: Feasible, maybe. Time-consuming though. The prisoners could now walk out the front gates, but you could use mold earth to sap your way into the great hall. Might be faster to bash the front door down, though. Depends on if you really want the element of surprise. (Which, mechanically, with the way I do initiative, would probably only be marginally different - they'd go at the end, though they might need to go grab rocks before throwing them at you, but I think they're all already holding rocks!
