D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Standing up from prone draws AoOs?

LOL, I've started a thread on kip-up and I was far from being that generous with a kipup dc. I used a house ruling of DC 20 as it was the same DC that made the MEA of mounting/dismounting a horse into a fast mount/dismount that didn't require a MEA.

I dunno, if this is what they were thinking or not for tripping, but it is the only Improved feat where as typically based there is still a possible negative effect if you fail your trip.

Improved feats of sunder, disarm and trip all take away the AoOs, but with disarm and sunder if you fail you fail and no harm done to you. With trip, if you start your trip and don't trip the opponent they can try and trip you. And if you have some tripping weapon you could get your weapon dropped or fall on the ground yourself.

I'm sure some don't like the AoO for people prone, but I do have to admit when you fall on the ground in a fight it isn't a good thing, not a good thing at all.

p.s. Makes prone attack look mighty nice

p.p.s. Just so you know Oriental Adventures has a kipup as a DC 35, a bit too high for my personal tastes.

Can someone please point me to the rule that lets you take a trip attempt as an AoA ?

I thought you could only make a melee attack not a trip, sunder, or anything else.

I think it comes about in that it says you can make a melee attack as an AoO. Then in disarm, sunder, and trip they indicate that "as a melee attack" you ca do those things.

PHB p128, Table 8-4, Footnote 5:

"These attack forms substitute for a melee attack, not an action. As melee attacks, they can be used once in an attack or charge action, one or more times in a full attack action, or even as an attack of opportunity."

The footnote refers to Disarm, Grapple, or Trip an Opponent, but notably not to Strike a Weapon, which is a Standard Action.

Alot of things in the game bypass HP. Spells, monster abilities, and many other game features can render a character useless, helpless, or dead without reducing their HP. Should we remove or redo these features becuase going around HP is cheap and cheesy?

Did it somehow escape your attention that hold person, harm and disintegrate all got nerfed in 3.5E?

Five feet as a move action, drawing an Attack of Opportunity. PH 3.5 pg 142
Hmmmm... so, reach weapon, Combat Reflexes, Improved Trip: someone approaches, you trip them, get a free attack. If the target tries to get up, you trip him again as detailed above. If the target tries to crawl away, you get another free attack - maybe a disarm this time (he's at -4 to hit so there's a good chance the opposed roll goes in your favor), leaving the target on the ground and weaponless.

I know what kind of character I'm making for the first 3.5 game I play in...

Hyp-

I see that reference your talking about in 3.5, but have to say it still is a bit odd to me that they say you can use a melee attack as a sunder attack, page 158 3.5 phb. Although on page 141, it has the same quote as you made.

*shrugs* still a bit confused.
