[4e] The Dustbowl (IC)

Caden glances over his shoulder as Rashka speaks. At the mere suggestion of withdrawing, the halfling raises an eyebrow in mock rebuke before returning his attention to the way down.

After the thrill of battle is over, Stick will stand stoically while the others go about their business. His focus is internal as he meditates, closing his eyes to the outside world and after a few minutes the large dragonborn stands, stretches and looks ready to go.

"I appreciate the enthusiasm Mialucus, but I think I could have handled a little fire by myself..." he politely mentioned, with an unbiased scowl, but clearly with a condescending tone.

Which is so far from reality it's downright chuckle worthy... "Watching it burn is NOT 'handling it', Roithy."

Mialucus looks the eladrin up and down -- the singed flesh, the bone-related scratches... "Hale?" Which is his way of asking 'You going to be alright?'.

[sblock=Short rest]Mialucus *will* take a short rest now, regaining all encounter powers, and strongly encourage Roithe to do the same. The elf is already at full health so no healing surge used on his side.[/sblock]

[Roithe] loomed slightly by his shoulder, observing what he did, looking for a chance to offer his input on any findings. (Having no concern for Mialucus' personal space and seemingly not knowing the meaning of the term).

"Revenge of the eladrin zombie," mutters the elf, sotto voce. It's a testament to *something* that the man has survived this long -- and with all his limbs attached as well! Eh, a pile of skeleton teeth, most still attached to their jaw! You can grow dragons out of those...

Thats when he realizes no one looks done, they all are curious about the area... No, no, no, not again, why must you lust for violence instead of p... he stops, thinks, Piety. There is a much better chance of finding Piety in the temple.

Mialucus laughs, head down and teeth sharp: "Outside, you mean, in the alcoves of Water street! Think the fragments can fit inside?" he asks, motionning for the ring.

<OOC: if Rashka tosses it over, Perception and Arcana, please. 1d20+5=16, 1d20+11=28 Are there any markings besides the sun? Clues to its intended use? Would the (assembled) fragments fit inside, closing the middle hole (try it with his own fragment)? Is the symbol identical to that found on the fragments? Rub it clean, wear it (left hand), wave it around in various directions (up, down, entrance, hut, tree, etc), try a few of the common command words including any specifically related to the quest ("sun", etc).

If nothing happens, try to take it off again. "Your turn, knower of the unknown." (flick it over to Roithe)

A brief look crosses Rashka's face, [sblock=Passive insight over 22]

Roll Lookup

Rashka hates his seniority level within the Temple, there is a lot of difficulty in faking your way to the top at such an early age...

His assignment is a constant reminder of his station, and everyonce in a while (8-10 on a 10 sided, checked if Mialucus, or Caden gives an order to Rashka)

He slips and makes a face, but has thus far recovered quickly enough that the group still believes he is pleased with the Temples assignment.

Rashka is not upset about being subordinate to Mialucus and Caden, he just hates his assignment, as it keeps him away from the Temple constantly. The lack of presence at the Temple for sanctioned social events, has hindered the speed which he had been climbing ranks.

[/sblock] but it passes quickly.

The ring is tossed over to Mialucus and Rashka begins stretching out. Careful to align each stretch for maximum efficiency, elongating, and lengthening, Rashka feels refreshed and limber.

PLEASE READ THE REVEALED MAP SHOWBLOCK FOR TURN INFO

Mialucus' tackle surprises the brooding warlock, but he quickly recovers and motions the bubbly elf away. Standing up and grabbing a small skeletal hand as a trophy, both Mialucus and Rashka examine the entrance way to the Catacombs, cross-referencing the strange but familiar symbols.

With a smile, Roithe seems to remember some old books back at Jurnae that have shown symbols that bear a striking resemblance to the ones that are now covered by horrific visages and other, stranger impressions. All three seem to remember an odd and not-oft spoken of "cult," as the villagers would say. The Revered Sun, some of them said, were crazy practictioners of Magic. They would bury themselves deep underground with small holes cut deeply into the earth above them in strategic places, allowing the sun to come into their shrines below the earth. No one truly understood why a cult joined so intimately to the sun would bury itself so far away from it's own symbol.

Looking at the ring, Mialucus is dismayed to find that the fragments are much too large (almost a half a foot in lenght) to fit into the small socket of the ring the cleric found. With a half-hearted look, he tosses it to the Warlock. Stick looks on after his meditation, anxious to continue.

The rogue Caden makes the decision to look down the entryway, and what he sees disturbs him slightly. Along the wall, every 20 feet or so, is a torch, alternating between the left and right walls. The walls are about 10 feet apart, and are covered in the same sun symbols that the entranceway is. However, about halfway down (that the elf can see), the wall begins to become covered in blood, strange symbols drenched with blood. Near the first torch (20 feet from the entrance), there appears to be a large, heavy door on the left side of the wall.

Randomly looking up, Stick sees the blue veins that appeared earlier beneath the tree on the ceiling of the catacombs. The blue vein trails nearly 60 feet straight down the corridor of the catacombs (not branching off to the door on the left) and seems to curve to the right past 60 feet.

[sblock=Revealed Map and Turn Posting]

RevealedMap_Entrance.jpg

* Map Note * - Each "square" in this map is actually two squares in all directions. This is only true for the revealed map. Other maps (ie combat, puzzle rooms, etc) will feature to-scale maps.

Welcome the first dungeon crawl portion of The Dustbowl! This dungeon crawl will work slightly differently than the combat rounds we previously have done. Since the players can only "see" the revealed portions of the map, each player will be allowed to post their turns at their leisure, following the new (and hopefully improved) posting order :

2 players > DM > 3 Players > DM

HOWEVER, if (and when) a player decides to advance the so called "Fog of War" by reveling a portion of the map yet unseen, that player must specifically state in his OOC actions that he wishes to go somewhere that the players cannot see. What must happen then is that player moves to the edge of the seen map (in the case above, D21) and the next part of the map is revealed by a DM update immediately after his posting, revealing the new part of the map and any actions/encounters that occur. This DM update can occur at any part of the posting order. A quick example :

Roithe and Rashka stay where they are and make checks/talk. DM updates their actions with results. Caden decides to move forward to D21 and reveal as the very next post after my update. Before Stick and Mia post their actions, the DM does another update with a new revealed map and posts any actions that occur, then Stick and Mia can post their actions, and we continue.

I hope this isn't too confusing for you guys, but this is the best way I could think of to really simulate a "dungeon crawl" without just handing you a map at the start and saying "have at it." However, sometimes you will get a map (or partial one) on some dungeons. If you have suggestions please voice them! Remember this is your game, I'm just telling a story. [/sblock]

Caden sniffs the air. He invites himself to examine the ring Mialucus snatched from the air, pondering how it might fit into the scheme of things; if at all.

"Looks to me like they mined this place to follow the vein," he says, pointing with his dagger towards the roof when Stick mentions it.

Waiting for the others to finish their consideration, the halfling decides that the door requires closer inspection and moves forward warily to do so.

After a last searching look at the maimed body from which the ring came...

<OOC: Eblue, any way to tell what race/sex/culture/profession it had when alive?

... Mialucus stalks after the halfling with his usual disreguard for marching orders. "Follow the roots?" he asks and then dips a finger in the blood... before fractionaly lifting his mask and giving it a taste.

<OOC: How fresh is the blood? How about the number of required victims to account for the volume? Any guess as to species? (Would Arcana perhaps help with this?)

Follow two squares behind, please.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Caden moves slowly to the door, weary of the hallway in front of him. Bouncing unseen through the shadows, he arrives at the door slowly. It appears to be very old and made of rotten planks. A small draft moves through the bottom of the door. Glancing through the keyhole, Caden can make out a large table directly in front of him, with a various assortment of papers and small daggers. It's difficult to read anything on the papers from this distance. Listening carefully, Caden can't make out any noises coming from the other side of the door.

Glancing at the markings on the wall, Mialucus can tell that a lot of bodies were used to smear this blood. Some of the markings look fresh, while others appear to have been there for quite some time. The blood doesn't seem to be from any specific race, but it's hard to tell with the sheer volume that stains the walls.

[sblock=Rolls for Mialucus]

I hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of making some checks for you, just to move things along. A Religion and Knowledge:Arcana check:

Caden whispers to those nearby to pass on what he has seen. Looking around for approval to progress, the game halfling quietly checks the door and then tests it.
[sblock=ooc]Check for traps on door (1d20+9=23).
