("Except," I think, "for that whole Einstein thing").

You can let Newton by on that one - the differences between Einsteinian and Newtonian mechanics were mostly not measurable by the instruments Newton had available.

Mind you, Newton was also into alchemy, and had personality quirks only acceptable in genius-caliber minds. :)

I attract that sort of conversation like a magnet. I must have one of those "you look like you'll listen to anything" faces.
You are in the same boat as me, sir, and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Yes, this is why I now avoid the public transportation systems. I seem to not be able to avoid conversations with people on buses.

Here's some I look back fondly on:

"I have a duck."

Awesome.

Here's another prime example:

"I'm riding the bus because my car is in the shop. I have a corvette."

Is that why you've been riding the bus for months now? Terrific.

"Quarter."

Yes, here's a quarter. Every day you need one more quarter to ride the bus, and for some reason I always seem to have them. Here you go. (I actually feel pretty bad for this guy... especially since I don't ride the bus any more).

It's all about eye contact man, or rather knowing when to make it and when not too. What's wrong with conversations on buses though? They make for great NPC inspiration.

Ranger's recounting of the nutrition question reminded me of a guy who used to frequent our agency a while back. I work for a non-profit that provides a variety of social services so we get on a lot of referral lists, which basically means we get phone calls/walk-ins from people with a massive array of issues, even if they don't apply exactly to what we really do. We do the best we can though. This guy used to come to us frequently for food assistance. He was homeless but didn't care about that. He just couldn't eat at ""soup kitchens" or access other food assistance providers because their menus were too broad. He could only eat apples and pears. For a while we all used to ante up a few dollars each to help him buy fruit from a vendor who would set up a truck near our office, but the requests became too frequent. One day, while he was asking for apple/pear money, we got a call from a farmer in north Georgia seeking help in his apple orchard. We have a refugee employment program so that's why he called us. Normally we balk at requests for what amounts to cheap immigrant labor, but this guy was a perfect fit. He ended up working, and eating no doubt, in this orchard in Ellijay, GA (famous for their apples). Win-win situation. All that to say, please keep an open mind and heart brothers and sisters. Surprises lurk out there, all over in fact, in places you least expect.

Medical field is where you meet all the crazies.

I volunteered at UCLA Med as an undergard and man the stories can fill this forum.. and much more.

One such lady would purposely hurt herself (run into walls, fall off stairs...) to get picked up and sent to a hospital. There, she can actually have conversation because her husband died a while back and her two children moved half way across the country.

I had to change her sheets a few time and she would be so nice and accomodating. Always all smiles and talkative, sharing almost everythign about her personal life. She carries around pictures of her childrenand grandchildren showing them to everyone who would give her a couple seconds.

A couple months later, she would be back in for something else. The nurses all agree that she is doing this to herself, and at first I could not believe it. But after a year of seeing her with broken bones and dislocated hips and what not, I am not so sure.

Poor old people, it is saddeign to think that that might be me when I grow older. Alone and desperate for human contact. Maybe I should give my parents a call...
