[Adventure] Serpent's Skull: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (DM: Mewness; Judge: THB)

Strangely, Takahaan seems less interested in the man's remains than the wooden structure. It seems as though Kane's interest in the treasure has rubbed off on him.

"Whether he was killed or not, we should definitely get this sort of box thing open. Who knows what useful things we might find underneath this poor dwarf?"

He inspects the surface of the wooden platform, hoping to find some way to open it.

"If all else fails, I guess we could force our way into this. Heh, right?"

"S-someone who knows the w-way off ... and the w-way back."

Kane looks thoughtfully at the wooden plug and the sides of the hole they have dug judging depth and trying to calculate if a cave in could have possibly killed the dwarf or to look for a clue how best to displace the plug. Shaking his head with a shrug and a grin Kane agrees with Takahaan.

"L-lets b-bust it open ..."

Taking Kane's advice, Takahaan motions for his friends to step back a bit. While the others check over the skeleton of the dwarf, the dragonborn pulls out Otaruhi Nodachi and brings hit above him. Bringing it down with a forceful blow, he attempts to chop through the wood beams.

OOC: Great rolls we got, jbear ._.

"Whoa whoa whoa" shouts Kane crisply and clearly as he dodges the swing of Takahaan's fearsome weapon. He grins when he gets back to his feet sending his coin spinning into the air.

"C-careful. This h-hole k-killed a dwarf. Any hole that c-can kill a d-dwarf d-deserves respect. L-lets bust it with brain and b-brawn" Kane adds with a wink. He goes onto to describe his master plan as clearly and concisely as ever.

"S-small hole in w-wood. L-light in h-hole. L-look and Hook in hole. R-rope in hook. P-pull on rope from t-top of hole."

Kane folds his arms with a nod, a smile from ear to ear somewhat akin to a cat that just ate the cream. He waits expectantly as if what he just said should be clear as day, and welcomed as a most brilliant plan to be put into action forthwith.

OOC: Ahahah, yeah! Top roll of 5! I think I've maybe rolled above 5 once in the last month or so ... at least that's what it feels like. You know that point of hysteria where terrible things begin to feel hysterically funny. I'm rrrrrrright up there! :)

Noriaki looks at the shovel as though Takahaan has handed him a dead rat, and drops it just as gingerly. "I'll tell you what," he says, turning away from the buried object, "You two play in the dirt, and I'll keep an eye out for anyone sneaking up on us."

"Hmm." Pezock sits down at the edge of the pit and starts digging through his satchel, dropping various hand tools and bits of metal on the grass. "I didn't think we'd be doing any drilling, but I might be able to rig something up as a hand-drill.... We'll still need to lever the plug up afterward, though, or maybe just chop through it."

Pezock works at the plug for a while, but drilling through it is awkward as the wood is quite thick.

OOC: Argh, ENworld has been terribly slow for me lately and I'm having trouble posting stuff.

Kane hugs the kenku when he produces a hand drill. It looks like he is about to kiss him on the beak when he remembers himself and instea slaps him on the back a few times enthusiastically. His excitement is tempered a little as the work slows. Eager to find a way to help Kane suggests:

"W-with a p-pick we h-hammer through then d-drill?"

As the work goes on slowly an idea begins to grow in Kane's mind. As he weighs its chances of working he rests his hand on the hilt of his sword.

OOC: I'm thinking about using Kane's sword daily power to move the plug. As you can target objects with power, he'd strike the plug and use the power to teleport the target (the plug in this case) next to one of my allies outside of the hole, of course. Possible?

"Sounds like a plan!" Castile says happily. She moves to the pit and tries to help with the drilling.

OOC: I like Kane's idea with the teleport.

After some of the wood is chipped away, the remainder is thin enough for Pezock to drill through. When he at last breaches the plug, a ghastly smell wafts from the hole, a stench of death and decay.

There appears to be a great deal of open space below: the plug covers a vertical shaft, and shining a light near the hole does not reveal the bottom of it.

When chips of wood fall through the hole, there is a faint sound--it seems there is water some distance below in the shaft.

OOC: Can't teleport the plug as it is not an "enemy" (although that's pretty creative). Pretty much have to hack through or dig around the edges and lever it up.

Kane decides his sword will have little effect on the plug. He takes his hand off the hilt. He takes a small stone, small enough to fit through the hole drilled through. He casts light upon it and drops it into the hole observing with his good eye what the light reveals as it drops towards the water.

OOC: The question of the validity of the use of the teleport power seems to be at fully at the DM's discretion, rather than something clearly defined by the rules:

Player’s Handbook, page 57
Add the following sentences to the end of the first paragraph: “Some powers
include objects as targets. At the DM’s discretion, a power that targets a creature
can also target an object, whether or not the power lists an object as a potential
target.”

At least that is my interpretation. I'm fine if its not possible, but I'd prefer if it was becasue you decided that it wouldn't work, rather than basing your decision on a rules interpretation of the difference between a creature and an enemy.

The wooden plug stands in Kane's way, between what he imagines as a wonderful treasure. It is thus by definition his most vile and hated of enemies! ;P
