Airwalkrr's 4e Game IC: Ch 1 Sedition

Not wanting the last guard to get away (and having little skill with initimidating -- she tends to strike from the shadows, at a distance), Lia moves so she has a clear shot (and will continue to down the hall) and fires another pair of arrows.[sblock=ooc]move: move to N9
minor: declare red1 as her quarry
move: Two-Fanged Strike vs. AC on red 1 (use elven accuracy to reroll a miss); prime shot bonus to hit applies, bow expertise bonus to damage applies

I think that will be two hits, which means +3 more damage, so 32 damage from an encounter power[/sblock]

GM: Even though I believe all of you were striking to subdue, the sheer amount of damage Lia dealt was overkill. If you didn't intend to kill him, I think you might have tried a weaker power.
Two arrows sink deep into the back of the guard. Lia's actions might have been a little reckless, given that the guard was clearly heavily wounded already. He falls to the floor, lifeless. Many of the other guards will probably die as well if their wounds are not tended to. Meanwhile the clerks are paralyzed by fear. You have a moment to regain your composure and assess the situation.
GM: The battle created a lot of noise. I will give your characters a couple of rounds to act, not enough for a short rest, but long enough to get your bearings and re-arrange things. You all earn 100 xp.
[sblock=For Lia and Erik]Your passive Perception allows you to notice that there is hurried movement coming from the rooms beyond, as well as upstairs (this is a two-story building). However those in the dry goods warehouse and stables are probably still unaware. You don't know how long you have to act, but by the sound of things you have caused a great clamor.[/sblock]

OOC: I wasn't sure how much the guy had left; if one arrow + HQ was sufficient to incapacitate him, she wouldn't have fired the second. I wasn't sure twin strike or her other at-will would do the job, and other than that, she doesn't have weaker powers.

Krawlinstar will try to heal the guard that is in the worst condition, and atend to the others that are suffering from risk of life.DM,how much time this will take?

GM: Accidents happen. The guy was bloodied and staggering away. You clearly threw your best efforts at him (aside from using a daily). I'm not counting it as an evil act or anything, but it was reckless to throw and encounter + hunter's quarry if you were only trying to incapacitate a greatly wounded enemy trying to run away.

Regarding technical applications of actions, use of a power can't be aborted mid-stream, at least not the way I'm running the game. The power you were using depended upon the firing of two arrows in rapid succession before you would have had the opportunity to gauge whether one was sufficient to knock the guy down.

Anyway, don't worry about it. I'm not going to penalize you for the action. I really just wanted to use this as an example of the fact that just because you are attempting to subdue an enemy doesn't mean an accident can't happen, especially when you use a lot of effort to take down a foe who is so obviously outmatched and wounded. You did almost as much damage in one action than his entire hit point total. So this is the exception, not the rule.

GM: Make a Heal check to give me a general idea of how well you manage to tend to the wounded. You can take 10 if you like.

GM: By taking 10 you manage to tend to two of the wounded. They are injured, but stable, and will probably survive. You haven't had time to tend to the other three yet.
Some of the clerks, seeing that you are not in fact intent on killing them, move in to aid in the staunching of blood flowing from the wounded guards' injuries. They say nothing to you, merely looking down and focusing on their work.
GM: I am going to assume Petron is watching the door for any activity out in the hallway beyond, from which there is currently no activity. He can see the front doors from there, and it seems that there might have been people in the foyer at the time you entered the offices, but they quickly scurried away when combat broke out. Other than that he can't see anything else.

Erik and Lia are up. What are you doing in the immediate aftermath of the battle.

OOC: The thing is that although Twin Strike (which is the basic at-will for 99.95% of PHB rangers) becomes absolutely devastating at higher levels as you get more bonuses to damage, at 1st level it's very, very variable (especially if you're not human and so don't have a spare feat for Weapon Focus to start with); you can do between 3 and 26 damage to your quarry depending on how the dice are flying. Which was why she used an encounter power; with poor damage rolls, it didn't seem likely red1 was going to go down. As it happened, she got excellent damage rolls.
Also, if Lia's ever attacking anything that's not her quarry, it's because she's twin striking minions two at a time, or in a strange position where she really wants to attack someone that she can't move into a position where it's the closest enemy. Rangers can't HQ quite as much as rogues can SA, but they're still going to use it more often than not.

Lia had intended to pin the guard to the desk, not shoot him through the heart. She should have known better than to try tricks like that in combat. Still, she moved into position looking out the door, bow ready. Elven eyes and a longbow gave her more time to act on any newcomer than the others.
