Walking Dad

First Post
If you still take submissions (made this background orginally for a now dead game):

Born Under a Bad Sign
My uncle told me that the caul was just superstition, and the howling wolves were just a coincidence. But I’ve seen enough to know that something . . . dark . . . is involved.

Your entire childhood was one superstitious omen after another. Individually, they’re easy to ignore or explain away. But collectively, it’s clear that something sinister has designs on your soul. What phenomena
did you experience as a child? Do you still see omens in your daily life? And do you have any clues about the specifics of your dark destiny?
Benefit: You substitute your highest ability score for Constitution to determine your initial hit points.
Good Background: Warlock.
One day, the young orphan farm boy Darren found an ancient stone circle in the woods. Standing in the circle, he heard unearthly voices. They were telling of an old pact between his mother (he doesn't know) and the fey. The strange dreams started the following night...
He has a cousin who studies the arcane arts on their mother's side. But Darren was raised and taught by the old village scribe after ma's death and became a little bit infected by the old man's superstitiousness. He wanted to save Darren's soul from his "devil worshipping" relatives (tieflings). He died last winter.

Now:
Darren rushed the serpentine path from the Old Oak to the cave he had seen in his dreams. He felt sweat on his hands and forehead as he stepped in the circle. No bird sang it's nightly song, the world seemed eerily silent.
Nothing happened.
Darren felt a desperation clutching his heart. Like in trance, he used his dagger to make a small cut on his left palm. He touched the stones with hand and blood.
Suddenly, green flames sprang from the stones and he heard a strangely familiar voice in his head:
"You came back to us. You accepted the old pacts your mother made with us. You will become a vessel of our might. Our voice in the world. We will send you dreams to teach you in our ways and customs. You will inherit our powers. You are one of US!"
With this last words, the flames died. As Darren looked up, his haselnut eyes had turned an emerald green.
Before his feat, a crystalline rod pulsed with an inner life.

Are you looking for one more? I would love to play a half-elf cleric/fighter who specializes in polearms. I would go low charisma since he blames his families deaths on the gods. I can give you more if your interested.

Mara's life was spent always on the move. Her parents served as guides for anyone and everyone, from all walks of life and all races. They only asked that in return the passengers impart a tale, or a piece of knowledge that was unique unto them. In this way they hoped to one day return to their deity, a peaceful god of knowledge whose name always seemed just beyond their grasp.

Mara was always particularly intrigued by her mothers ability to conjure flames from the air, and would often flip through her tome, attempting to decipher the words within but to no avail. As they travelled, and Mara grew she applied herself, asking of their guests a boon of language, wondering if perhaps one day she would be able to read the words scribed inside her mothers book.

The years wore on and it became apparent that Mara's mind was sharp. Some nights she dreamt of flying through the sky, hurling bolts of lightning and great conflagarations of flame. Other times she dreamt of kneeling before an altar whose symbol she could not make out.

One day she and her parents had just finished escorting a most wondrous passenger, an Astral Deva on an urgent mission. When they arrived safely at their destination, as was their custom, her parents set camp to receive their payment. When the Deva came forward, it said that it's payment would set them free. With that it opened its mouth and a cacophonous noise burst forth, one syllable whose power was palpable in the air. It knocked Mara flat, and just aas her head struck the earth she saw her parents forms limmed in brilliant light, tears streaming from their eyes. We remember they said as one, then leaning down her mother tucked the book next to Mara and whispered something so soft Mara could not hear.

When she awoke they were gone, and since then Mara has learned every piece of knowledge she gained in her life, pursuing that which her parents sought. Penultimate acension to the side of their unnamed patron.

This game's dead I think. SeaPainter was in a game of mine, and suddenly disappeared. That reminds me, I have an open slot for a deva avenger if you want to take the character. Click on my signature "Games I DM" and A Paid Trip to Spellhold: D&D 4e, Forgotten Realms. You can find the character on the RG link, and in the IC link you can read his appearances. Let me know if you are interested.
