Deadwood?

Well, that was fun

Is Deadwood any good? I've heard a few good things about it, but not much in detail. I'd love to hear a bit more about it from people here.

I must admit, I've never been an Ian McShane fan. I hated Lovejoy with a passion. Hopefully I can get that awful show out of my head while watching him!

It is excellent. Dark, dirty, gritty, and you need a calculator to keep track of the number of times someone uses a single word to say, ah, "performer of fellatio."

Seriously, the dialogue is excellent (but not for the faint of heart) and the characters are all exceedingly well drawn. Of course, I've only watched Season One. I understand it only gets better from there.

It's outstanding.

Excellent writing, excellent casting, excellent acting. Humor, tragedy, intrigue, complexity, triumph, duplicity, greed, passion, sacrifice, history, philosophy, sex, gambling, prostitution, drinking, violence, drug-running, theft, profanity. What's not to love? :D

I must admit, I've never been an Ian McShane fan.
He plays a major character in the show -- one of the most pivotal to the show's success (though there isn't a poorly realized character in the series, as far as I can tell) -- so that's something to consider. He's excellent, though, in his role, and the character is unforgettable.

I can't recommend the series enough. They even do a neat thing at the end of every episode, as the credits roll, they have a different piece of music, some older, some contemporary, but all with a Western (not necessarily "country) feel, and it's just a little thing but it's a really nice touch. The show is tremendous. I'm biased, as I love westerns, but this show does a great job of stepping outside of the traditional western style, and showing that frontier life was not a very nice experience, even under the best of circumstances. It feels dusty, dirty, grimy, difficult, and dangerous. There's a host of terrific characters played by excellent actors, and there is definitely not an overabundance of "pretty" people. McShane is all murderous rattlesnake laughter and menace, Olyphant (as Bullock) strides with such absolute purpose that he makes simply crossing the street look like a mission to kill someone. Carradine is laconic and melancholy as a fading Wild Bill Hicock who's still the deadliest gunfighter north of the Red River. And that's just three people. There's numerous others, and they're all very well developed characters, but not in such a way that it stretches the series too thin. It's brilliant.

I have to agree with everyone. I've had Deadwood Season One sitting on a shelf at home for 3 months, and only eventually started watching it because of praise here.

Totally sucked in. It's a slow build, but by the 4th episode I knew I was hooked. I've now seen the 1st and 2nd seasons twice, and eagerly await season 3 in March.

Ian McShane is amazing in this show, and portrays the greatest character ever to live on television.

The show has also changed my vocabulary, as most of the hooples here will admit. :) (As in, my normal conversations are not fit for Eric's grandma!! -- ie, the show exhibits an entirely new level of profanity but elevates it to Shakespeare.)

I have to add my praises as well, but I have a bit of a bias for westerns (movies anyway) so take it as you will. Deadwaood has one great thing going for it though, consistency, it is always good, I can't think of a single bad episode.

As for Ian, I like the guy. He is great in Deadwood. I loved him in Sexy Beast as well as in Babylon 5:River of Souls. He's got the KaosDevice seal of approval. ;)

Loved it. I'm NOT a huge western fan but that show has changed it. I have watched more westerns since I have seen Deadwood then I ever have before in my life. And that was like 4 or 5 months ago.
Ian McShane plays one of the greatest characters..ever. I also laughed a whole hell of a lot.

I've got to episode 4 now. I'm not really seeing the Ian McShane thing. Seems to be doing a fairly average job of acting, and is surrounded by a load of pretty poor actors - both Wild Bill and Seth are as wooden as can be. Still, the surprise ending of episode 4 intrigued me enough that I'll carry on watching for now.

You sure your watching DEADWOOD? Takes place in South Dakota? Wild Bill, Seth Bullock, the dude who played Wormtongue? I bet you have a crazy censored version and you are wondering why everyword is BEEP.
