D&D 5E DMs which books do allow players to use

I voted "Anything," however that means that anything not in PHB, Volo's, Mord's or Tasha's should be discussed with me first. I am unlikely to allow anything from other settings, but I am also willing to work with players to make a concept work.

Anything. In my first 5e campaign two of the players were using UA options for their character class. In one case the option was officially published and we switched to that. I want players to enjoy their characters and explore whatever mechanics best fit them. Unlike 3e/4e where CharOp was a huge deal there were things I wouldn't allow in those games. I can't say the same for 5e.

So I put homebrew only....but that's not actually true either. How about another selection... Ala Carte? I like things to be setting focused, just to add that bit of grit to the picture, so battle-mages wielding anime weapons and doing wire-fu doesn't quite mesh with a historical western campaign. Likewise, ninjas in black PJs roaming the surface of Mars doesn't work either, you know, unless it does. So honestly, it really does depend on the specific campaign style/type I'm running at any given moment. So all the answers could be correct or none of them.

No. Players should be able to understand limitation to setting as well as a DM has to understand player desires. It's a two way street.

I find it telling that the OP does not present the PHB and XGTE only as a combo. Tasha's is an abomination that is not allowed at my table.

Yeah, several people have said something similar, but there is no option for it in the poll. To me it would be blatantly bizarre to care more about what book the thing was physically printed in rather than what the thing actually is!

All WotC stuff is allowed. I have a huge list of homebrew stuff that I've already looked over and encourage its use. Anything else you find, just talk to me about and I'll look it over, possibly make changes.

Honestly, whatever crazy idea you have, just talk to me and we'll formalize some progression for it. 5e balance is so loose it really doesn't matter much.

I don't disallow anything, but what I do allow is very much campaign specific. Some campaigns work fine with an anything goes approach to what character options are allowed, while others are better served by a somewhat or even very much curated set of options. I always discuss this in my pitch and session 0 so there aren't any surprises. I'm way more expansive for cool character ideas than I am for transparent optimization.
