Does anyone play warhammer?

I have a question about warhammer.

When you make your army roster, what all are you allowed to withhold from your opponent?
Does he have the right to know that unit X has X strength, etc. Can you hide who has what magical items, special abilities, etc?

Ive not ever found this in the book so I've always thought the opponent was entitled to this info, but I read a spell somewhere today that revealed secrets in an xx" radius, such as magical items, etc so it got me thinking. I am still new to the game so it seems like it would be good to know, since everyoen I play with is also new to the game.

Im not quite sure. When we stared playing, we couldnt find rules for it either, so just considered it common knowledge. We got outof the game quick tho, my Lizardman army wiped the floor with everyone else, always ended up in a Massacre point win.

Been playing WH40K for a long time and the things we've kept hidden (until used) are the strategy cards, the spells, special wargear (like vortex grenades), and reinforcements. Unit properties have always been common knowledge. Kind of hard to keep the properties hidden anyhow with everyone so familiar with them.

We have our lists written up so if we ever challenge each other we have to pony up some proof (not that it ever has happened).

Magic items and spells are kept secret.
Location of special troops, like those goblins with the huge morningstars bombs, are kept secret.
Hero identities are open.
Armies are open.
Special units are open.

Well, damn - I thought I was gonna be all helpful, but BG posted pretty much exactly what I was gonna say. Here's a tip, though - if your opponent has a big unit of Night Goblins and he's practically begging you to get close to them, it's not much of a secret that some Fanatics are going to make at least one of your units cry like babies. Babies being slammed with an enormous metal ball on a chain.

okay, so what about reinforments in fantasy?

for example the dwarven miners. If my opponent has dwarven miners I could be completely unaware of them until they come on the board?

I've been playing WH40K since the heady days of 1st edition. It's usually been understood that you do not have to show your opponent your army list until and unless there is a dispute or question over the wargear. Unless you are using a paticular character (such as a custom built army general) over and over again, the list will vary from game to game. Keeping your regular opponents on their toes is what it's all about, and surprising new opponents at tourneys or cons is tremendous fun as well!

Jonesy talks about Stategy Cards and Wargear Cards.....man, are you still playing 2nd ed.? Those disappeared (thankfully) with the advent of 3rd ed. The 4th ed rules are out, but they mostly just clarify several rules problems from 3rd ed.

Well I have all of the editions, but we're actually currently playing heavily modified Rogue Trader with the strategy cards from Dark Millennium. :)

My group keeps magic secret and assassins and stuff, but stats, etc are all fair game (which they really need to be, due to the nature of the rules)

Huh. I've played a fair bit of 40k, and the way I've always seen it played, you do not keep anything secret unless the rules explicitly say that it can be kept secret.
