D&D (2024) Flanking no more in D&D 2024?

According to Pointy Hat flanking is no more, or at least not in the new DMG. I think that's OK, I never really liked it. But I thought it was a popular rule.

Am a bit surprised that they didn't keep it as the optional rule it was - not exactly a lot of space taken up by it.

I wonder if they kept the optional facing rules. They kind of go hand in hand with flanking.

My impression is that the optional combat rules are just gone.

I'd never heard of Pointy Hat. But watching that video I really like him. Thanks for posting that!

We tried it as well. Similar result.

I still use it. Might need to review with the players why to not use it when we swap over at some point.

I think PF2E took the majority of the players that required tactical encounter each combat. DnD is probably just letting that small group that takes more resources to design for go. It seems to me that 5E has almost been defined by mot being the crunchy pathfinder or 3e game and that seems to be what most want

Flanking doesn't make any sense with the relaxed Opportunity Attack rules we've got with 5e.

Flanking shrinks the tactical decision space because it invalidates a lot of abilities that grant advantage since 2 sources of advantage don't do anything.

That actually might be the biggest problem with 2024; so many things grant advantage to attacks now.
