For 4vengers: What is your preferred fallback edition?

Which edition would you play if no 4e game were available? Choices are limited to the D&D Brand,

  • D&D 0e

    Votes: 3 4.7%
  • D&D Basic (B/X and BECMI)

    Votes: 16 25.0%
  • AD&D 1e

    Votes: 1 1.6%
  • AD&D 2e

    Votes: 4 6.3%
  • D&D 3e

    Votes: 1 1.6%
  • D&D 3.5

    Votes: 14 21.9%
  • D&D 5e

    Votes: 25 39.1%

You've somehow managed to get tickets to VaporCon, and arrived ready to play some D&D!

Unfortunately, all the 4th edition games are filled up, because it's just so popular. There are, however, openings for games that use the rules to these other editions: 0e, Basic (B/X & BECMI), AD&D 1, AD&D 2, 3E, 3.5E, and 5E.

Which game do you join?

AbdulAlhazred: What was it we had for dinner tonight?
Elaine Dickinson: Well, we had a choice of steak or fish.
AbdulAlhazred: Yes, yes, I remember, I had lasagna.

cavalier973, I'm breaking your rules too.

If I wasn't playing 4e, but had to play some version of D&D, I would probably choose the modified version of AD&D that I've written up for my own amusement (it started with the goal of tweaking all the classes' advancement details - hp per level, to hit per level, spells per level, etc - to make them fit on a common XP chart, and has grown a bit from there).

I guess I should tick AD&D on your poll.

In the real world of lasagna and cheesecakes, I am playing Burning Wheel.

EDIT: why are the poll results hidden?

Aw, crud; I picked the wrong polling option. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking.

They should be visible to anyone who votes.

So far (as of 09/22 @ 6:27 a. m. CST), no one has picked 0e or 3e. We have 2 votes for Basic (well, 3, but one of the votes is mine, and I'm not counting that one), 1 vote each for 1e and 2e, 3 votes for 3.5, and 4 votes for 5e.

cavalier973: Burning Wheel? It's an entirely different kind of roleplaying, altogether.
Rumack, Randy: [together] It's an entirely different kind of roleplaying.

It would be nice, folks, if you played along, rather than just tossing the thread concept to the wind. "Any game you please," wasn't one of the options. In a convention scenario, sometimes you have limited choice - go with it.

The poll, perhaps, should have included an option for, "If 4e is not available, I would prefer to not play rather than play another form of D&D".

I have to say 0e then just for the nostalgia factor. We really only played true 0e for a very short time 40 years ago. I'm not really all that tempted, but I can imagine having an amusing session or a few of them stumbling through the maze of half-written rules making stuff up.
