As long as i get to be the frog
The point is that the game used to encourage making it your own.

IMO. The rules they made for making it your own almost universally sucked. And the people that really wanted to make it their own did so with their own rules.

Like i get the disappointment that the lack of such rules signals a more one sized fits all ruleset. But the actual rules they had for doing anything else just weren’t very good and I don’t think they could have actually been made good.

So I get it, but I don’t blame them for taking them out of the dmg either

Let's talk about the boots of striding and springing.

The 2014 version: "While you wear these boots, your walking speed becomes 30 feet, unless your walking speed is higher, and your speed isn’t reduced if you are encumbered or wearing heavy armor. In addition, you can jump three times the normal distance, though you can’t jump farther than your remaining movement would allow."

The 2024 version: "While you wear these boots, your Speed becomes 30 feet unless your Speed is higher, and your Speed isn’t reduced by you carrying weight in excess of your carrying capacity or wearing Heavy Armor. Once on each of your turns, you can jump up to 30 feet by spending only 10 feet of movement."

It looks to me like the boots have been hit pretty hard with the nerf hammer. For starters, these boots used to be great for the short-legged species with 25-foot speeds. Now that all species have a base speed of 30 feet, that aspect of the boots is pretty much useless. Note that the boots specify that your speed isn't reduced if you're carrying too much weight or wearing heavy armor, but not if your speed has been magically reduced.

And then the extra jumping is limited by both how far you can jump and also by how often you can do it.

These boots have made regular appearances in my games, but I'm thinking I won't bother handing them out much anymore.

Interestingly, they removed the word "walking" from before "speed." Technically, the way it's written, the boots should increase your Climbing, Flying, Swimming, and/or Burrowing speed as well (it they're below 30 to begin with).

In the 2024 rules, "Speed" = "walking speed". If they mean one of the other speeds, they specify it as "Climbing Speed", "Flying Speed", etc.

Oh well, I haven't read the Rules Glossary all the way through yet. Some of it I skipped over because I took it for granted I already knew about it.

Maybe I'm reading them wrong but they look much stronger now than they were.

You get an extra 20' of movement and your jump isn't constrained by your strength or if you have a running start.
