Jack pushed on the doors. While they were very heavy, it came as perhaps something of a surprise that they swung open, inward. It was even more of a surprise to the hill giant behind them, whose back was to Jack, and who turned and looked at the wooden bar that was leaning up against the wall with a confused expression that could only mean that she was thinking, who forgot to bar the door!?
It only secondarily occurred to her that she was in danger, and she began to reach for her club.
The immediate space was an L-shaped mudroom, with doors that would likely lead to the Great Hall on Jack's right. Piled near the door were several pairs of giant boots. Past the hill giant on guard, the room widened to a large dormitory, with a dozen beds, a blazing fireplace, and braziers hanging from the rafters.
A half-dozen young hill giants were lounging on the beds or playing push-and-shove in front of the hearth. They all looked northward to the newly opened door with foolish, confused expressions.
