Morgan sighed, lamenting the sudden turn of events,

There goes negotiations

The abjurer had very little he could do in this fight. Sprinkling cantrip on enemies would do very little to stop anyone, especially Theggar. Being cornered in this room with a powerful Red Wizard on one side of the door and a pack of gnolls on the other wasn't going to end well. They needed to retreat.

But first.

He looked around for the rest of his belongings. He knew that Theggar had some scrolls somewhere - if one was an abjuration, maybe he could use it to power his wards...

If Morgan doesn't already have his talisman, he looks for it. Also looking for magicky stuff like scrolls:
Investigation for my stuff: 1D20+7 = [19]+7 = 26

Arcana to remember or to have been able to have recognized any scrolls he might have seen during his stay here
Arcana looking for scrolls: 1D20+10 = [10]+10 = 20

Vairar sets his pike to receive charge of the leading gnoll. But more importantly, he calls upon the power of the elven goddess to aid him in this battle. Thunderous boom explodes in the hallway tearing away lamps, carpets, gnolls and anything else not nailed down.
"Come for me, bit**s! I'll smoke your hides better than that titan you serve."

"Incoming!"
he calls to the group in the room, just in case someone missed the thunder

OOC:
sorry for disappearing, work trouble

@FitzTheRuke did Vairar finish 10 minute spell? Prayer of healing?

Shatter: A nonmagical object that isn’t being worn or carried also takes the damage if it’s in the spell’s area.
Is the hallway/bridge itself counted as unattended object? Could the explosion bring it down?

Move: BR31 - blocking the exit of the hall
Action: upcast Shatter to 3rd level, invoke Destructive wrath channel divinity, 32 damage to all in the effect Con DC 14 for half
Position it in lower right corner of the Noryeghu if that will catch the shaman, or upper right if it won't from the lower part.
The shaman needs to make concentration save too :)

Reaction: Wrath of the storm: if he gets hit by a gnoll (first come, first served), the creature takes 9 lighning damage (dex save DC 14 for half) and is pushed 10' (thunderous strike feature) 2d8 = [5,4]= 9

Tommi had been waiting outside the wizard's chamber. He was itching for a fight, and not entirely sure why his companions were talking to a Red Wizard without punching him. He had kicked a few of the gnoll corpses, looked at the bodies to see what a gnoll considered a valuable it would carry with it, and truly astounded at how bad these creatures stank when lying on the floor.

He hadn't realized how much time had passed when suddenly the scrambling in the adjoining corridor brought a sense of relief to him. Finally, he thought.

The stones in his hand had grown cold -- he hadn't noticed -- so he quickly charged them up, and stood back to have a clear shot. Vairar, like a hero, stepped forward, and Tommi cursed himself for not doing the same. Still, he was determined to stop any creature trying to make its way past.

And when one finally appeared, he launched a stone.

OOC: Bonus: Cast Magic Stone.
Move:to BU 34 (to get a shot at BS30); further back if needed
Action: Ready an attack on the first gnoll to reach BS 30 (and so adjacent to Vairar, an ally): 1d20+7=24 (HIT) damage = 4d6+4=14 magical bludgeoning.
Reaction: when needed. Means he doesn't have Uncanny Dodge or Skirmisher available this round. 2/3 stones left. [posted when trying to add the link for the rolls; bold text added afterwards, with no additional details in the main narration after getting the roll].

Lionel rummaged through the content of the chest and stuffed the grooming kit, the gems and the ebony coffer into his backpack. He stood up and showed the spell book to Morgan. This might be yours? he asked. I did not see any spell scrolls but there is magic stuff on the desk, he said and pointed.
There was commotion in the room and corridors outside and it sounded like more gnolls were approaching. Escella scorched the red wizard suddenly and Lionel was unsure what to do. He decided to stay and keep an eye on the wizard. He raised his crossbow and would shoot if the wizard would attack any of his friends, including himself.

Morgan smiled and patted the spellbook that the Red Wizard had already given him. Morgan, himself, had considered grabbing Theggar's spellbook off the table but, in the moment, they had been negotiating.

Legend
Titus rode up the road toward Phylund Lodge. He had seen signs that his friends were about; dead gnolls on the roadside, an injured hyena-worg that ran past him, diving off into the woods as soon as it spotted him. He had let his beard grow in the week that he had spent with the Druids, who had helped to purge him of any lingering influence of his near-possession. Had it been only a week? No, it was less - but it felt longer. Much longer.

He slowed his horse, Blaze, as he neared the worn-out old lodge. His family, the Ashfields, had a hunting lodge like this, several miles away, but much like this one, its use had fallen out of fashion, and he hadn't been there in years. He wondered if it was in as bad repair as this one - infested with gnolls.

Suddenly, there was a loud thunderous crash and the walls blew out of a covered hallway between the lodge's two main buildings' second floors. Two dead gnolls fell out, landing in the dirt of the breezeway underneath.

Still standing on the now-wobbly hallway was a vicious-looking gnoll with a look that haunted Titus' memory - a shadowed half-face, with the other half having a fiery glowing eye.

OOC: @tglassy is Welcome back as his old character, Titus!

Legend
Vairar had moved to intercept the charging gnolls, and was now joined by Lunn. He sent out a shattering burst that took out the walls, much of the roof, and two of the gnolls in the connecting hallway. The closest gnoll dove toward him, snarling, but Tommi flung a stone over his shoulder that struck it in the snout, and then Lunn finished it off with a blow of his axe.

The two remaining gnolls were the White Shaman and Noryeghu the War Chief. They howled and rushed across the bridge-like hallway, with parts of the floor collapsing under their feet. Noryeghu attacked Vairar furiously with an axe, but the elf just defended with his pike, until finally one blow struck home, then lightning channeled through the pike and the gnoll chief stumbled backward, catching himself just short of falling through a hole. The shaman struck a bell, and Lunn felt his stomache lurch.

OOC: Vairar did 32 to Gn2 & Gn3 & to the Hallway, & did 16 to Noryeghu & the White Shaman. Noryeghu missed Vairar; Shaman did 14 necrotic to Lunn (dc12 WIS save for no damage) & made Noryeghu hit for 8; Vairar did 9 lightning to Noryeghu who almost fell through a hole in the bridge. Be back to finish the round in the Red Wizard's room.

As the Red Wizard recoiled from Escella's blasts, he began to cast a spell - in this case one that made him fade from view, turning him invisible.

OOC: @Prickly Pear I guess Lionel could use his readied crossbow, but he'd have to attack with disadvantage, I think. I'm not 100% on which happens first. Thoughts?

OOC: @FitzTheRuke Readied attack would go on the act of casting a spell and the hit (and damage) would have a chance to interrupt the spell.
That's how I would play it.
So, action sequence:
starting to cast --> triggers reaction --> shoot --> does damage (or not) --> concentration roll (depends on damage) --> spell is cast (or not)

Titus cracked his neck. His memory of the past week was spotty at best, but he knew one thing: gnolls can just die.

Titus pulls out his hand crossbow and takes aim at the easiest target: the glowing eye.

_: 1D20+5 = [18]+5 = 23

Assuming that hits:

_: 1D6+3 = [4]+3 = 7

(Note: Since Im using the playtest Fighter, I have Mastery over four weapons: Longswords, Shortswords, Hand Crossbowd and Whips. Because of my Mastery of Hand Crossbows, I have advantage on my next attack before the end of my next turn. However, since I took Dual Wielding and Defensive Dualist instead of Crossbow Expert, I can only do the one shot, so I will stow the hand crossbow and move closer to the baddies.)

OOC: Against the same target, I believe. So unless someone knocks him down to you, you'll have to get up there. It's about 12 feet up, but you can do some crazy riding (stand in the saddle) and jump up there with a dc14 Athletics Check. Or if someone knocks him down, you can run over him with your horse (free Hooves attack if you move through his space on your turn, as long as he is still prone when you do it). But this will have to wait for me to roll the round. Which I will do, as soon as I can get the chance.

This is a tricky one. The trigger is "Ready to shoot if wizard attacks" and I think that Lionel would assume that the wizard would attack when he start waving his hands around and muttering something incomprehensible to cast the spell. So, yes, Lionel will attack. With disadvantage? There is nothing in the rules about that unless you deem that the wizard is already invisible. I would go with, no, he is not invisible yet. And if Escella counter-spelled him, he should still be visible.
There is no allies around the wizard, so no sneak attack opportunity through ally-closeness. However, Lionel was observing him to see weakness in wizard's defences through his Insightful Fighting skill (DC 22 vs CHA (deception)). I would assume that will be hard to beat.

The wizard pulled out something from his pouch, waved his hands and muttered something incomprehensible. Watch out!!! he screamed as Lionel feared for his friends safety and then let the bolt fly. Lionel hit the mark that he had observed just moments earlier and the wizard stumbled.

It was a tense moment as Morgan wondered what would happen next.

FitzTheRuke

Legend
As the Red Wizard began to fade from sight, Escella felt the pull of magic that surrounded him. She pulled back, and the spell failed. Theggar looked at her with surprise and frustration. How had she learned to control the magic that the gnolls had infused in her? So many others had died or gone mad. So many that he had abandoned the experiment all together. The gnoll's ritualistic technique was barbaric in his eyes, and it made sense to him that the subjects had gone mad - the gnolls were mad as a gibbering mouther.

But not Escella. He yearned to autopsy her corpse and discover why this was. All of this went through his head as Lionel's quarrel crossed the room and struck him in his wand-arm. His hand went numb and he wondered if he would still be able to make the three-fingered cross that was the somatic component of a powerful spell that he hoped would turn the tide.

OOC: Always gotta remember: "Bits & Pieces" - when I can't find time to roll a round, I can try to resolve just a character or two at a time. Slowly & surely wins the race. Lionel shot Theggar for 18 after Escella countered the invisibility. Still gotta deal with the dwarves, but I should be able to get to that soonish.
