Tommi listens to Angis's explanation. He hears the reasons for enmity, and, though he doesn't understand he does know grudges run deep, the way Miz. Furlong won't sell buttons to his mom Jyn anymore because of the incident at the fair that one time.

Truly, if Angis had wanted to challenge the elf lord to a duel, he would understand. But it doesn't explain the silly jokes. The stakes are just too low.

Angis is older than him, and so he defers. "I understand, I guess. I took the elven hospitality, and it's up to you to decide how to treat me, who did not take your ancestor's god-crown. But the joke wasn't funny, and I can't believe it does your ancestor proud."

Tommi reaches out to scratch the nag behind the ears. "I want to be your friend, Angis, and I will face death beside you. But I don't want to be made party to your jokes when they're rooted in hate."

Tommi picks up a stone and puts it in his pocket, for later use.

Legend
The elves led the way out of the Laughing Hollow and after a few hours, the group found themselves on a high ridge overlooking the river as it wound northwards. In the valley below there were farms and river-side fishing homesteads dotting the landscape as it stretched onward. From the look of them, they had been raided, perhaps as much as four-or-five days ago.

One of the elves, who's name was Maingalad, pointed far up the river and said, "There is your town, Julkoun. If we hurry, I judge that we can be there in under four hours."

"Closer to five, with this mule-cart." argued another elf, in elvish, who's name was Tarthagal.

"Yes, I had not factored the mule-cart." agreed Mangalad, switching to elvish.

"Well don't forget it." said another, named Ulaqui, as she scratched the mule behind the ears, "For we will not leave this magnificent creature behind, nor his esteemed master."

"Shall we go then? Or will you all just stand here bickering?" asked another, named Ganalan.

Averiel shot an apologetic glance at any of the Daggerfordians who had watched the exchange, and she led the way forward down an old trail.

Tommi doesn't speak Elvish, but smiles at Avariel. He watches her lithe movements, and those of her companions, and he's smitten with a schoolboy crush -- transient, temporary, but oh-so-important. But he knows better than to do anything about it. Partly out of shame and his own feelings of inadequacy, but nor additionally, he doesn't want to offend Angis.

And so he continues along the road, looking down at the ground at the road in front of them.

"Dwarven friendliness. Have a go," Drui said, offering his skin to Angis.

“Me thanks, brother,” Angis said, taking the skin. He handed his own skin to Drui in exchange, and it was something decidedly knock you on your arse strong. “Brewed it meself,” he said with a grin before taking a long swallow of Drui’s in exchange, then trading skins again.

Angis looked at Tommy and shook his head. “Lad, ye’re no’ a dwarf an’ can dae wot ye want. I’ll no’ fault ye f’r tha’. Dwarves ‘ave long memories an’ keep long lists o’ wrongs done us. Ye think wot ye like aboot the pointy-ears.”

Speaking of, they were jabbering away in that lilting tongue of theirs again. Angis didn’t much like that he couldn’t understand them. They could be glibly plotting his slaughter.

Angis glances over to Tommi again, noting the look in his eyes, the way his gaze is continually drawn to the elven lass. He sighed and nudged the boy.

“Gae talk t’ ‘er, laddie,” he told Tommi. “Gae make nice. Tell ‘er...she reminds ye o’ some pretty flower ‘r somethin’.” Angis paused. “Then again, best no’ be takin’ advice from an ugly, surly dwarf.” His voice trailed off as he thought about his love, married to his his brother, raising his son.

“Bah!” Angis groused.

Dandin listened to the chatter as he drove, not wanting to intryde in conversations, but hoping to gain an understanding of Angus's motives. He had high hopes of establishing good trade relations across the region eventually, and hoped he could find a way to either placate or bypass the surly dwarfs moods in some way. He had a few thoughts, but none to be acted on in this moment.

As for the elves, they gave him an excuse to practice his language skills, and he spent most of his time making small talk with anyone who had time to listen to him chatter. At the compliment, he beamed at Ulaqui's compliment and responded in kind.

"Why thank you, Hanar really has earned his keep and I do my best to keep him healthy and happy. And we really do appreciate the grand entourage to escort us to our destination!"

Tommi hears Angis' advice, but does not understand how to act on it, and so he does nothing. The dwarf seems compassionate, but is at the same time so filled with anger and weighed down by the burdens of the past that it unsettles him.

Legend
The elves were right. Just under five hours later, the group found themselves nearing the outskirts of the Village of Julkoun. They had passed a few farms and fisherman's huts, and all appeared abandoned or burned. Here, on the approach to the village, it was no better - the outlying farmhouses were utterly ravaged.

The village itself, seen from a few miles away, was built on the grounds of an old castle, long gone. It was divided into three sections: The northernmost section sat at the foot of a large hill, much higher than the southern section, which lay on the banks of the Shining River. Both of these sections were surrounded in a figure-eight moat, with a wooden palisade and guard towers. Lastly, built outside of the palisade on a floodplain to the west (directly in front of the new arrivals) were a series of barns, sheepfolds, and fisher's sheds, burned and ravaged.

To the north was a dense forest, not as vast as the Misty Forrest which lay only a few miles away on the others side of the river, but a sizeable forest all the same, which rose with the land. The main road which led to and from the village disappeared into its shadows.

OOC: You are still pretty far away. I'd like to know how you'd like to approach. I might have a player version of the map at work. If so, I'll post it tomorrow.

"The damage done to that place..." begins Tommi, looking at the farmsteads. "It seems recent doesn't it? We should see if there's anyone there who needs help. Then we can make our way onwards to the town."

"If there's anyone left, they'll be inside the walls. We should keep a sharp eye out though, their attackers might still be close."

Dandin did his best to discern the state of the city from their vantage point, he didn't hesitate though, in urging Hanar on towards their destination.
