"Baazka wanted to bring this to some castle to open a portal."

Morgan gave a description of the place he'd seen in Baazka's mind's eye, hoping someone else might recognize its location.1

"In any case, give me some time to identify this. It seems the fiend is gone but I wouldn't trust him to not follow us or try to rally someone else to get it from us. Once we know what it does, we can destroy it if it makes sense."

Morgan thinks for a moment,

"I have the necromancer's spellbook. It's possible, besides necromantic spells, there's spells that have ways of dealing or banishing outsiders. I also have the his journal. I went through it briefly and believe I can decode it2. But all of that will have to wait until we sleep tonight. For now, if I could get a half-hour I can find out what this rod does."

Morgan pauses for a moment,

"Worse case, my Mentor, Delfin might be able to help us or have something in his library about it."

Leaving the rest to talk about what they might be able to do, Morgan takes out the pearl ring that he found on the Red Wizard and starts a ritual to identify the rod.

Good time to talk things over IC

1. Morgan failed an INT check to recognize the castle that Baazka wanted to go to....Maybe someone else will recognize it if Morgan describes it.

2.A long time ago, you asked me to make an INT check DC 20 to decode the journal, which I succeeded but there was no time to peruse the journal so I still don't know what's in it.

Casting Identify as a ritual using the pearl ring found on the Red Wizard.

"Is this mentor Red Wizard? It might be better to take the rod to an elven wizard? He is less likely to misuse it."
Vairar moves away from the well
"We should return to that room we can close. And keep double guard. Just in case. That castle with orcs and goblins isn't too far from here."

"Is this mentor Red Wizard? It might be better to take the rod to an elven wizard? He is less likely to misuse it."
Morgan looked at Vairar straight in the eye, possibly insulted that he's been associated with the Red Wizards of Thay,

"Just to be clear, I was imprisoned by the Red Wizard, Theggar. He's a necromancer and definitely NOT my mentor.

I did my education in Waterdeep at the Blackstaff Tower but before that Delfin Yellowknife, from my home town in Daggerford was my mentor. He asked me to come back home to investigate rumours of Red Wizards acting in the area and I was captured en route to Daggerford. Unless he's grown in power since I left home, I don't believe he's an archmage and, though he's very, very old, he's not an elf. I've heard of an elven wizard in these parts, though. If he's as powerful as you say and if you trust him, then it would be smart to bring it there."

Vairar moves away from the well

"We should return to that room we can close. And keep double guard. Just in case. That castle with orcs and goblins isn't too far from here."
He nods and starts walking with the others, "yes, I've already warded the door there."

"I just want you to understand that I'm a worshipper of Chauntea and do not practice necromancy. I believe in the sanctity of life and the natural order of life and death. I'm a physician and abjurist and not a Red Wizard."

I looked through all the background info and I can't find anything about an elven wizard in Daggerford so I'm assuming it's someone you met in your adventures? I imagine Morgan would have heard of them growing up in Daggerford, but maybe not.

double post
there's a room that is locked with an arcane lock and where Titus has kept his horse. The lock is keyed to the PCs.
Let's:
-Identify the rod
-remove the trap from the necromancer's spellbook
-find a place to sleep (I'm not sure if we want to stay in this complex? there's still gnolls running around but it seems safer than being in the bush.) I don't even know what time it is.
- Read Theggar's Journal.

Probably in that order....and unless people have stuff to add, maybe we can advance time...

Listening to Morgan's description of a castle, Helgrim whistled as a possibility dawned on him. "That sounds a lot like Dragonspear Castle, laddie! An' it makes sense, too, though I ken it was demons an' nae devils, but a great battle was fought there, a century ago, an' the place was used t'summon fiends. 'Tis under 200 miles south o'Daggerford joost offa the Trade Way."

"I can consult my Uncle, Ashfield, in Waterdeep."
suggested Titus, "On Blaze, I can get to Zundbridge before nightfall, and on to Waterdeep in the morning. I'll meet you in Daggerford."

Ashfield was known to Morgan, a senior wizard of Blackstaff Tower. (Blaze was Titus' horse).

The "Elven Wizard" that Vairar referred to was Sir Darfin Floshin (or perhaps his sister, Shalendra) - both were wizards with hundreds of years experience between them. Sir Darfin had lived in Daggerford as long as it had existed (though he had spent many years off adventuring) and Morgan knew of him, and had seen him about town, though they had never spoken.

Shalendra he knew only by name, as she had been gone from Daggerford for longer than he'd been alive, but the party informed him that they had rescued her in the Elves' family Manor House - from a mysterious possession (one that now sounded familiar) - and that she was in their debt.

The Floshin Estate was on the way back to Daggerford.

Tommi is quiet, and does not offer opinions for the moment. He is pleased that the Fiend did not stay around, but that does not mean they are being watched. But he feels it will do no good to point this out at this time.

He will wait for Morgan to identify the rod, which they will still do without needing to bring it to others. He will wait to see what is learned. He steels himself, recognizing that he might object if the decision is to pass the rod to any else. Right now, he believes this group, together, is best prepared to deal with this situation, and that introducing others only puts them at risk.

For now he waits.

"I apologize, Morgan, we were rushed in introductions and I misremembered the name. Theggar andDelfin are not the same not would I imply such, but they mixed up in my mind."
The priest offers apologies to young mage
"About the rod, though, while we could consult Lord Floshin and wizards in Waterdeep, it would be good to be careful who we reveal the existence of the rod or our posession of it. Who knows who might be interested in more than just consulting."

"Frankly, we should do something with the rod here, immediately or as soon as we can," Escella says. "We can't guarantee we would be able to transport it 5 miles unmolested let alone hundreds of miles. For now, we were planning to rest. Let's head back to the area where we found Taran. It was somewhat defensible, I think. Unless my memory of the aftermath of the fight with the Thayan is faulty." This was probably the most she said at once in a long time. She must be tired.

The fight with the gnolls on the Lodge's second floor had quite damaged part of its roof (as well as collapsing the pass-over walkway) and as dusk approached, it began to rain. The upper floor was something of a loss for comfort. But there was a large hall on the ground floor that had a fireplace (cleared and ready-to-use). Helgrim got a fire going in it, and Morgan sat at the long oak table and studied the rod, with his magic to let him know more about it. What he discovered was that it was quite powerful, but also quite horrible.

Titus agreed to stay, and he set his beroll in front of the stall in the stables where he kept his warhorse. Helgrim sat at the end of the long oak table, with his head on his arms, and soon the old dwarf was snoring loudly.

It wasn't quite bedtime, but it had been a very, very long day.

OOC: You can certainly have a long rest. You deserve it!

Once the doors are warded, Morgan identified the rod and his finding left him disgusted. In fact, he pushed the item off the table onto the floor*.

"This item is vile. Its sole purpose is to bring pain and suffering. It can summon creatures of pure evil. Even charging it requires blood sacrifice, which is why it was under the altar. I think we should find a way to destroy it. I have no idea how it could be used to open a portal and I don't care."

We should take double watch in case Baazka tries to get it back tonight. I'm going to spend time studying the journal. Can someone look at the trap on this spellbook?"

****

The next morning Morgan felt refreshed but was deeply troubled.

"Where to?"**

*if it's breakable, he doesn't do that....we want to destroy it safely.

Ok, so apparently a magical trap can be disarmed with an arcana check. If it's mechanical, I need one of the rogues to do it.
Arcana: 1D20+10 = [17]+10 = 27

Also, @FitzTheRuke what's in the journal?!!

If I have a chance to see what's in the spellbook, I'll do that too. (come on, BANISHMENT!)

*this could depend on what we find in the journal.
