I think there are way too few feats and way too few skills and way too few backgrounds.

Not sure about skills but I'd be shocked if future books failed to provide additional options for feats and backgrounds. So it's a lack that won't take long to assuage.

But there's way too many spells! :p

Anyway, they'll be happy to sell you many more. And then you have this stuff spread out across 12 books and need a separate product just to keep track of it.

Does Shield Mastery allow you the graphic novel / comic trope of using your shield to protect you from the dragon's breath? If so, awesome!

Am I the only one who saw Inspirational leader and thought "warlord"?

And yes a single skill isn't worth a feat, not in 3.x, not in 4e, and specially not in 5e.

I'm fairly certain that they have and that the majority of players will choose an extra feat over +1 to their 4 least important stats. The extra skill is just a bonus.

What would you give in place of that feat, in a gaming group that doesn't allow feats (at 1st level at least), to a player that still thinks the +1 to all stats sucks? Would you think a second bonus skill is a balanced idea? IOW, +1 to two scores and 2 skills, is it worth? I'm just trying to figure out.

Let's put it this way - Elves get +2 +1 to stats, Darkvision to right away halve the potential situations that could cause one to take Disadvantage to every action, a few minor boons (weapon training, movement speed/hiding, cantrip/language), AND the best skill in the game, Perception.

Human getting +1 +1 to stats, and 2 skills in comparison is like, what.

I think more than just making Humans mechanically vaguely competitive, they need to have their own identity (which could've been achieved by giving them sub-types based on region, but nooo, that's for the cool kids). Something like an inherent Inspiration pool maybe? Start at 3 per session, see how it goes. Then Humans don't do anything great, but they can negate Disadvantage when it matters, or shine at critical moments in spite of lower scores.

I think the human identity in Basic is pretty strong. They're the diverse, can-do-anything race, and they build great and lasting ideas rather than being alive themselves for years. They're welcoming of all and may be heroes or villains.

This is contra the elf or the dwarf, who have a more limited scope, and tend not to innovate as much, and tend to keep among their own kind more than adventuring out in the world.

Wait, is Lucky seriously "always roll an extra die on attacks, saves, and checks"? He did not list a number of times per day or per encounter, did he?

That's crazy. Like, good crazy. I'll now be disappointed if it is limited in how often it occurs.
Considering he said:

it's clearly a limited resource of some kind.
