NG vs. NE: Neutral Evil is Victorious!

That might not work so well because Sticky is very snakelike. Sticky will be able to become unprone as a free action. Otto would be able to notice this, so should be allowed to choose a different action.

I thought in another fight in the Arena there wasn't any differentiation, but it's that's true he'll go for a straight stick of the trident into Sticky. Is this another Rules of the Game I should look up?

Sticky will slither into the water, then swim to 100N95E, provoking an AoO, which (I believe)cannot be a grapple attempt because Otto has both hands on his trident (RotG).

Sticky will concentrate and a smelly cloud appears, centered at 105N75E.

Found it in Rules of the Game, behind spoiler so as not to annoy readers who don't care.

Who Can Be Tripped: Any creature that is subject to gravity and somehow holds itself off the ground is subject to trip attacks. Incorporeal creatures can't be tripped -- even by other incorporeal creatures -- because they can't fall down. A prone creature has already fallen down and can't be tripped. (This can prove significant when you've tripped a foe and wish to keep him down; see the section on being tripped [below].) Limbless creatures pretty much just lie on the ground (at least while using their normal land speeds or just standing around on a fairly level space) and usually can't be tripped unless they're climbing or in some other precarious situation. This includes creatures with the ooze type, snakes, and anything else that wiggles and slithers. The rules don't give any guidance on creatures whose body types make them immune to trip attacks, so you'll have to rely on your common sense here.

and comment

I'm always cautious of the "common sense" argument when phrased right after a stated example that doesn't match my common sense. :) I've flipped a snake on it's back, and it took about as long to get righted as a dog or cat would take - so should quadrapeds with flexible spines get up as a free action too? Should it be a full-round action for turtles and spiders? Or are we all better off making it a MEA for everyone, and say that it includes the concept of being disoriented and getting back into a fighting position or stance?

Anyway, back to our fight.

Otto gives him such a stabbing as he slithers away.

OOC in response to the comment.
[sblock] The problem I have with your comment is that being prone does not necessarily mean on your back. Sure, it may be hard to imagine in some cases being prone and not on your back, but considering a human there's a distinct difference. I suppose a lot of these types of rules would be better (i.e. more realistic) if we actually considered the physiognomy of each creature. But, that may become extraordinarily complex pretty quickly. Round 300: Otto hits (rolled 36) for 37-15. Sticky has 149 hp.

Otto disappears in a cloud.

Otto:[sblock]You are not nauseated by the vapors (36 Fort save) but you are shaken by the attack (natural 1 Will save).[/sblock]

Otto's deep voice is heard to curse in the fog.

Otto walks south until he gets to the wall (using his trident to make sure he doesn't slam his giant nose into it), then walks east until he clears the cloud. Once he can see the dragon, he walks along the bank of the water until he's in stabbing range.

Then he sticks it to Sticky, again.

Sticky will breathe acid at Otto, then swim five feet to the east before submerging. Otto can see Sticky go down and under the webs, but might not be able to see Sticky's ending position at [sblock]100N85E-40Z.[/sblock]
