It's a real trick giving you the right number of rests to keep you fresh enough to keep going but not destroy the challenge. Keep in mind this whole adventure was originally a 4-hour Game Day with no (long) rests and no levels and a whole lot of TPKs. (To be fair I HAVE added a ton of stuff for my own amusement. And hopefully yours.)

I understand that, but at the same time, I'm pretty sure 5th Ed was built to allow at least the occasional short rest without added shenanigans.

Squirrels are evil!

Let's get a group going. If we fail, we fail.

Sesto just need to down a healing potion and then he can go fighting. Currently 20/45 HP and only cantrips and weapon attack available. 6HD left. (Does the cleric ability "Blessed Healer" work with healing potions?)

SnorLoska needs more HP to be effective, currently 5/65 HP. He needs all healing potions or, better, the maximised potion and using HD - 4 HD left (60 HP maximised). He has got one more rage available and that's best to save for last fight.

Small group gets the last idol, the rest can rest. Let's get the idol, level up, then Pyrus can let a few people take a catnap and we'll move on to kill this durned dragon so Pyrus can take the staff for hims...for the wizard.

I'd have allowed for a lot more short rests if you had taken less long rests! :P

But you're right. I'm not trying to take your short rest away here, I'm just trying to get you to stop 'goofing around' and go get the Idol! :P

It's interesting to see how this adventure changes with each group playing it. The last time I ran it, the Idol you're going for now (the last one) was the first one found. You guys have managed to utterly destroy the Dragon Cult (usually the place where the most TPKs happen) which is an unnecessary (if satisfying) task.
