D&D 5E Out of the Abyss IC

Kago caps his skin after filling it from the waterfall. He pauses a moment as the others try to come to an agreement, whether it be over loot or which direction to take. He ultimately decides he doesn't care about the bit of gold he's lost, as it won't do him any good down here. He takes off toward the west passage, giving the irritating monk a disapproving glare as he passes. He didn't bother looking to see if anyone followed.

OOC: Moving on...

Solace looks at Turvey, this ridiculous little being of whom she's so fond, and she wonders if it would be easier for him to be carried. In any case, once possessions are returned and supplies accounted for, she follows Kago, guiding the wee myconid as she does so.

Turvey seemed to trundle just fine on his own, and readily kept pace with the group. For being so runty, the svirfneblin was quick. Kamael took one whiff of the unguent handed him by Raza and handed it right back; it smelled of condensed rat piss. He couldn't make out its use or worth. Raza peered at the obsidian heart shown to her by Kamael. She could see immediately that it was not her own item. It was, however, amazingly similar to hers; too similar to be a coincidence, perhaps.

Waterskins filled from the fall, the ramshackle group set out toward the west passageway.

OOC: Settle the pace (fast, normal, slow), default marching order (single file and two-abreast), and whether someone is navigating and someone is mapping, and we'll be on our way.

Raza Thulcandra

Raza's demeanor changed when Kamael showed her the other obsidian heart. She asked if she could see it and if Kamael complied she held it, turning it over in her hand like it was a treasure beyond its small monetary value. It was with obvious reluctance that she returned it.

"It is a focus for meditation, prayer, and invoking the divine. Mine, it seems, is lost but I could use this one if you were willing to allow me to hold onto it."

An omen, that I should trust this one; at least, for the time being.

She sighed as Kago took off. Partnership with her fellow prisoners was going to be... difficult.

"Indeed," adds Solace. "Take it with our gratitude."

She begins to realize the immense powers that her fellow travellers possess. Is she the only ordinary mundane one, she wonders to herself, casting a quick Light spell on the end of a small piece of rope she has found -- something light, that she could throw a short distance or could drop if needed in a fight.

With Kago out front and Shuushar close behind, the party fled the outpost single-file via the western passageway. Kamael focused on remembering the twists and turns the group took. Still, the going was rough. While the passageway stayed mostly level where water had leached through rock to form a natural tunnel that intermittently narrowed in places, close-set rock walls required everyone to occasionally squeeze between tight places. The sandstone floor of the drow outpost quickly gave way to stratified limestone that broke off in flakes here and elsewhere in huge slabs that petered on falling. Everywhere, a wall of darkness pressed against the bright light of multiple spells, which had to continuously be re-cast every hour or so lest the group be plunged into utter black. Jagged shards of broken limestone were hard on the feet, too, and no one had shoes. After perhaps eight long hours of a punishing pace, everyone had tripped at least once. Everyone had cuts and scraps. Everyone had fresh bruises. And, while everyone had water, no one had food...save for Raza, who'd secreted away a pound of salted fish. Kago, who'd take point all day long, felt the air change, grow colder. Up ahead, his orc eyes detected an opening. An eerie cavern littered with countless bones loomed ahead where the passageway yielded to an open space with a high ceiling. All was natural rock.

OOC: Current (non-default?) single-file marching order, using a fast pace: Kago << Shuushar << Solace << Turvey << Kamael << Raza << Jimjar << Stool << Brinn.

At the sight of the opening, Solace instinctively douses the Light she has maintained. Brushing off her hand, she takes the hand crossbow out and offers to scout ahead, inching forward carefully.

She checked to see if the shimmer around her persisted and proceeded.

Solace crept forward. Save for the bright light shed by Kamael's spellcraft, all was dark. A large cavern yawned to Solace's front. The ceiling was too high for her to make out, but she could hear the rush of water. At the far edge of her vision lay a moving stream that cut deeply in a channel into the limestone bedrock. Some sixty feet to the south, she spotted a closed wooden door inset into a natural rock wall. The floor in the chasm was littered with bones of all shapes, sizes, and age.

OOC: Grid squares are 5' each. Kamael's twinned mage armor is still going, though not for very much longer (probably only another ten minutes).
