Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season 3 Viewing (Spoilers)

Especially when Doug Jones was sooo good, and they had the whole fearful to fearless dynamic for him as a leadership development arc.

But, also, this thread's about SNW, not Disco, so... to at least continue thematically on captains...

How are folks taking the slow-slide-in of Kirk? I am... a bit mixed on it. I think the actor's pretty good - his bit in Space Adventure Hour was inspired - but find the storyline... awkward, I guess?
Doug Jones is always excellent. You should see him as the cringe-worthy mayor in the webseries "Fallout: Nuka Break", based on the video game.

Honestly the only Kirk insertion that has seemed forced was him being on the holodeck for the murder mystery. Now it was a cool episode I didn't mind it, but yeah of all the people the enterprise has transporter records of they just happen to pick Kirk....a bit on the nose.

But the idea that his ship was attacked the Enterprise came to save him and work with him....sure I'm in. Kirk dropping by to see his brother because they both have shore leave....perfectly plausible. Now normally you would expect some communication ahead of time but this just establishes Kirk as the impulsive, seat of his pants, kind of guy. Hes like "eh let me go surprise my bro", and off he goes.

That one makes sense because the whole thing was tailored to La’an’s preferences. She had a crush on Kirk after their time travel adventure, so it makes sense he’d feature in her holographic fantasy.

I’m fine with it too. I like Paul Wesley’s take on young Kirk. I actually wouldn’t mind if they did a young Kirk spin-off after SNW ends. As someone who has tried and failed to watch TOS, I wouldn’t even mind if they “rebooted” it with the current crop of actors. At this point, we’re only missing Sulu, Chekhov, and McCoy, right?

And Chekov joined the crew in season 2, so while his absence would be felt it'd make sense for him not to be there. Maybe make him an occasional drop-in, much as Kirk is in SNW.

I would happily watch that show.

Yeah. For the record, I tried to spell it "Chekov" but I see that my phone auto-corrected it to "Chekhov". 😣

So my general thoughts on this one:

1) I saw 4 extras in a corridor. Yay budget!
2) Not a single exterior shuttle shot, making that whole sequence just Ortegas rocking about in a chair and narrating the external events, and only one exterior Enterprise shot (as it entered the wormhole). Boo budget!
3) The episode was… fine. But so derivative that I was a bit bored.

One episode left. I’m hoping they’ve been saving the budget for this one!

As someone who hasn't watched much of TOS, the derivativeness (derivations?) go over my head, so your #3 isn't an issue for me. However, as I've said before, I really am with you on the budget. I mean, you could really tell even just in the sparseness of the barren rock world set. I'm guessing it was shot on a set and not outside anywhere.

Do we know if the recent Star Trek shows use the Volume (or something similar to it) like the recent Star Wars shows do?
