Star Wars Iconic Characters: Interlude...

Valara accepts Set's Saber almost reverently craddling the hilt in her hands gently. Although she was familiar with wielding staves and branches with the same size and shape, the difference in weight and balance was telling and the amazon barely kept the blade from striking her leg.

"It appears that this weapon will take a long time to master." she says, her purplish-brown braids still swinging around her head from her attempts.

Slowly she takes the position as given by Set, balanced on the balls of her feet, slightly crouched, the lightsaber held at a 45 degree angle to the ground, its but only a few centimeters from her navel.

"What now Set?" she asks, looking for his approval.

Dorn glances at Sen as Sia walks into the ship. The young Jedi padawan has a thoughtful look to him as if pondering something important.

"Hey Sen...where do you think she found that fruit? Blast, it looks tasty! I need to find some before we leave, or she's just going to tease me with her personal stockpile for the entire trip. Maybe Arani knows where Sia found it. I'll have to ask her."

Dorn frowns slightly and absently rubs the back of his head.

"By the way, you don't think Master Yoda really rues the day I became a Jedi, do you? I mean, I know Sia was just teasing...but still, Master Yoda used to give me this look sometimes..."

"Huh?"

Kaz looks up from a table where the assorted parts he had in his hands a few moments ago are now strewn about seemingly haphazardly. His goggles are pulled down tightly over his eyes, giving his face a flattened, comical look as his magnified eyes bulge from beneath them. The parts he's now holding, and moreso what he plans to do with them, are a mystery.

He looks at Sia, seems to think for a moment, squints at a display on the far wall, looks back to Sia, shrugs, and says, "I guess the computer's been in time out long enough. Don't worry none, it can't hear us. If you like, we can flip 'er back on and see if it's learned some manners. Just a minute and I'll finish up with the reprogramming I was doin' to the memory matrix."

The Zabrak stands, licks his oil-greased fingers, proceeds to wipe them on his oil-stained coveralls, and walks over to another seemingly random assortment of parts. He pulls out a cube with tiny glass prongs coming out of each corner in every direction.

"Shouldn't take but a minute."

Sia-Lan wrinkled her pert nose slightly to dispel the sudden itchy feeling at its tip. Otherwise she found herself a perch somewhere and made herself quite comfortable while she waited for Kaz Lo to get about his business.

"Have you always had your head in machines?" Sia asked, pulling one leg up against her chest and swinging the other freely. Taking another generous bite of her nice big piece of fruit, she thought of the nice satchel of extras she had brought especially for the trip and wondering if Dorn would find any luck find any more of the fruit.

Ha! Good luck! I got the last satchelfull, she giggled to herself. I wonder how long I should wait before giving in. Patience is the virtue of a Jedi, isn't it?

"This is good stuff...I hope they have more wherever we're being dragged off to," she spoke aloud to Kaz.

"Have you always had your head in machines?"

"Well, ya I suppose I kinda have, " Kaz smiles sheepishly as his goggles become opaque. He has plugged the memory matrix into some kind of device which is connected to his vest...which is connected to some other stuff...which is ultimately connected somehow, someway to his goggles. His head swivels from side to side as he appears to be reading something. "Y'know, droids can sometime be better friends than people. Cuz you can program em. They ain't gotta be mean, or ..or greedy or nuthin. But then, I guess a droid's only your friend cuz you program em that way. Gosh...things sure are more simple with machines."

He continues to pluck away at thin air. Whatever he's doing, he seems to be fairly confident with it.

Sia-Lan shrugged, gesturing with what's left of her fruit. "Isn't that kinda boring though, Kaz? Living with things that always do what you expect them to? I find people fascinating...they're always doing something unexpected...I like unexpected. It makes life just...vibrant, you know?"

Staring up at the ceiling dreamily, she starts humming a ditty that sounds suspiciously like If you're happy and you know it clap your hands.

Getting back to his feet, he walks over to the ship and calls under to Kelko.

"How you doing under there, buddy? Need a hand?"

Kelko reappears momentarily. "A hand? No not really," he admits glumly. "Just patching up a few energy shunts. Likely to blow up spectacularly and take me with them, knowing my luck. But I've got them under control."

With a forlorn sigh, he glances over at the new Zabrak addition to the group. "Plus, even if I do die underneath this multi-megaton hunk of metal, there's always someone else who can easily take my place."

The Rodian straightens up, tapping the large tool in his hand against a cheek absently as he examines the ship closely. "Ah yes, that airlock needs fixing," he remembers, striding over to it. "Else it might just open at an inopportune time and suck us all into the depths of space. Lovely."

"What now Set?" she asks, looking for his approval.

"No, your grip is wrong." speaks Set firmly.

"Most actions are taken with the weapon held in both hands, the lower, left hand does all the work while the right guides the blade. There are no left handed grips amoung Jedi. In fact, a left hander actually has a slight strength advantage with a slight loss of directional control with this grip."

Set positions Valara's hands upon the lightsabre and continues to lecture.

"The proper grip is firm, yet relaxed until just before the moment of contact with your opponent's body. Then, the grip tightens, not unlike wringing water from a towel, as the wrists transmit the final snap of power into the blow in a kind of whipping action."

"Grip the base of the handle using your left hand with no part protruding below the smallest finger. The smallest finger grips most tightly, with grip decreasing in strength up to the index finger and thumb. The web of skin between thumb and forefinger does not touch the handle."

Set moves to Valara's back and reaches his arms around her to guide her arms in the proper motions.

"Your right hand grips just below the emitter. The strength of grip is similar to the left hand. Some Jedi have the right forefinger very loose, crooked almost as if it were on the trigger of a gun. Your hands should be about 2 finger widths apart."

"Your left hand is the primary source of power. Your right hand guides the blade. Now your stance, placement of the feet is even more important then the grip..."

[OOC: OK I cheated, did a search on "lightsaber fighting" and did the old cut and paste. :D ]

"Ya I guess. There's always chaos logorithems, but I see what you mean. Well, that oughta do 'er," he says, lowering his hands as his goggles clear and his amplified eyes can be seen beneath them. He looks at several different things for a few moments in an attempt to sort everything into some semblance of order. Then he picks up the memory matrix and turns around, calling over his shoulder,

"Ok I gotta put this back in. Oughta turn back on in about a minute."

Kaz walks down the hall, opens a floor panel and gingerly climbs down into the space below where the computer's CPU core is located. The hallway around the space reflects the florescent blue glow of the displays down there.

A mild-mannered voice wafts from the ship's speakers, |...Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a KDY 6000 computer. I became operational at the KDY plant orbiting Kuat on the 12th of Elona, 12,650. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you...|
