Summon Monster Question

First Post
In the Summon Monster spell description, it says that the monster attacks your "enemies" to the best of its ability. My question would be: does this mean the monster automatically knows who your enemies are? If you summon a Dire Bear into the middle of a messy melee, would it know what you know? Or would it mistakenly try to Improved Grab the Cleric as he tries to heal the Barbarian?

Any Sage advice on the topic?

I think you should just take it on faith. =)

Since the caster is summon a creature to help him fight or whatever, I would think it would naturally know who its enemies are based on its summoner's perceptions.

Your not so much as summoning as creating. I think the magic infused in the creature allows it to know what your enemy is.

I am inclined to agree with the notion that who it attacks is a matter of your character's own perceptions. I'm pretty sure (though I don't have the books with me here at school) that if you want it to do anything besides attack, you need to be able to communicate with it. (which is why my summoning-focused sorceror has Extend Spell and knows Tongues).
