Thirst for power (Finished) (Knight Otu judging)

(Not that it matters overmuch, but here's Dungannon's answer to the port question:

Ravensdale owns a port, but it's not located inside the city. The following is from the info on Ravensdale I posted in the Atlas & Almanac thread here.

"The road exiting the city to the north runs to the dock complex about a half-day’s journey to the northeast. The dock complex, while not inside the town proper, is considered part of Ravensdale and is run by the Transport Guild.")

"Ah, no thankyou," says Beamer turning down the offer of tonic. "We smaller folk are used to be tossed about I guess, which I suppose if fortunate in this case. My name rings a bell? I don't think we've met before, but I suppose there must be man Bartholemews about. It's nice to meet a man of who values the intellect. There's more to a person that the size of his biscepts. I afraid I haven't heard of that monastery. What kind of books are you seeking? Orussus has a very nice library, I've been there, though I'm sure you already checked it out for youself."

"Sure, I´ve exhaustively scrutinized Orussus library, and it´s been immensely helpful. My field of expertise is theology, though I´m not a blessed man: I study them, but lack dedication to do their work and be, in return, invested with spells. The subject has fascinated me since I left my home at Gotian, and never stopped looking for the truth. It´s however, difficult to apprehend, since frequently faithful of the same religion have views almost opposite on their mentor gods."

"Ah, yes, and an interesting field I am sure. It would certainly be nice to have a god looking out for me personally, but as you said it takes an awful lot of devotion. I try to pay my respects to each in turn as they are all worthy of respect or else they wouldn't be gods right? How long ago did you leave Gotian and what did you do to occupy time there? We were thinking of stopping there though not entirely sure. Looking for work, you see. We'll decide at the docks if it looks like work may be found. If not, we may just continue on."

OOC: I'm going to be without Internet for the weekend. I don't want to force the game to pause so feel free to take over the conversation. Beamer will continue to ask round about questions in an effort to learn more about Gotian. He will try to give away as little about himself as possible. Oh, and I added a cure light wounds potion to Beamer's equipment.

"Wise words" say Beldard.

"How long ago did you leave Gotian and what did you do to occupy time there? We were thinking of stopping there though not entirely sure. Looking for work, you see. We'll decide at the docks if it looks like work may be found. If not, we may just continue on."

"I´d continue if I was you" says the scholar, suddendly changing tone. "Gotian isn´t the place it used to be. I left when I was a child, but I still have family there and visit as often as I can and speak with the people there, and also I have eyes on my face, as they say. Gotian has grew rich with trade as Orussus did, but money isn´t the same as prosperity, since the council members are rich people and they make the laws they want. And guess it, they make laws that make them even richer. Oh, and better not to complain, because then your life becomes hell."

Tis a pleasure to meet someone like myself. I too am on the hunt for knowledge.... amongst other things. Though I find the subject of gods to be rather boring. What more is there to really say about gods that a monastary or other followers haven't said. Though I prefer to learn about the opposite side of the coin.

That is where true knowledge lies.

upon Beldard changing tones.

So you feel the city of Goatian is becomming, if not already corrupt? Who are these folks that have such power over others?

"I don´t disagree, except on the boring part"

"You can bet it´s corrupt. It´s not complicated, the rich -those who sit in the council- grow richer, and the poor grow poorer." complains Beldard. "Who can stop you when you sit in the council and make the laws, and the guard exist only to crush those who protest?"

"Sounds like somewhere we don't want to stay. What's trade like there? I hear you can buy almost anything. Guess that comes from dealing with Orussus"

"I remember the market when I was a child, and was more active because there was more people selling and buying. But you´re right, many ships coming to and from the south stop at Gotian."

Who can stop you when you sit in the council and make the laws, and the guard exist only to crush those who protest?
"That unfortunately seems to be a story that is all too common. Has there been much violence? In what sort of business is your family? And how has business been in recent months?" asks Beamer.
