I think its quite possible.

My own setting downplayed (Half-Elf) or removed (Half-Orc) these options. I'm curious why Half-Elf is so popular here, because yeah I would not be sad if they dropped them in the next PHB (I know they wont, backward compatible, yadda yadda).

Adding Orcs, and then having Elf, Half Elf, Human, Half Orc, Orc...sure.
"Backward compatibility" means, you can pull out your 2014 Players Handbook in year 2024, and it will still work fine.

It doesnt mean that the 2024 books need to reprint everything.

I would agree, but I'm not sure thats what we are going to see.

In fact, I would put money down that we will see the race options rewritten, extensively in some cases, and generalized into the template of Witchlight and Fizbans.

2024 is still some years away, but I also expect the future books to reformat the races.

Who knows? Maybe elf will be a "family" of "kinds" to choose from. Or in an effort to reduce the many kinds of D&D elves, make one or two "kinds" that are highly customizable, where players can pick which features they want.

In my view, the essence of elf is to personify magical energy, success, and beauty. But a meaningful division is between the luminous skyey versus darkvision earthy.

(Wood elf and drow elf could easily be cultures within the earthy kind of elf. Even the aquatic elf might be the "earthy" kind that chooses an amphibious feature.)

So if there is just a skyey kind and an earthy kind, but each one is highly customizable, I dont see a need for any other kind of elf.

In any case, the 2014 books should still be usable and balance equally with the future format.

I think its pretty obvious from my past posts I'm very against "Just use the basic ones"

Gnomes are my jam, always have been even as disrespected by the system. 5E gnomes are in a goodish spot at least (and invalidated tinker gnomes)
I like bugbears. Don't know why, just always had a soft spot for those larger goblinoids.
I prefer the idea of shifters much more over their execution, which has always been a bit. Lacking. But the idea's warm enough to me it still gets a vote. Plus in 4E they had dinosaur versions and given the LACK OF SAURIALS that's the closest I can get to dinosaurs

Even though, let's be honest, if Saurials popped up I'd yell about the art direction and them being tied to really old depictions of dinosaurs
