Just curious to see whether people, on this board, mostly DM mostly play etc. And a quick search didn't reveal a similar question/poll.

To clarify: If you are in multiple groups, consider them as a whole (so, for example, if you exclusively DM one group and exclusively play in another with both meeting bi-weekly, you DM and play in equal measure.)

Thoughts?

Edit: woops, immediate typo in the thread title - well what can you do!

If you'd asked this last week I would have had "Exclusively DM" but as of this weekend I'm a player in what looks like it might be an actual semi-regular game. For the first time in more than 20 years (Oh grod has it been that long - yup nothing more than one shots or failed campaigns since before 3e came out).

In my group I almost exclusively GM but that's changing. I've gamed with basically the same group for decades and up until about 15 years ago I would alternate GM duties with another friend. Unfortunately, he turned out to be a thief and a liar and left the group. Since then, I was the sole GM. About 3 years ago I decided I was burned out on Pathfinder and wanted to start running other stuff, which the group is fine with. However, they all still like Pathfinder so one of the players stepped up and has started running it and I get to play. We alternate but he runs shorter adventures, where I tend to run long campaigns, so I am still spending more time as a GM than a player. He's been talking about wanting to try to run longer campaigns so we will see where that goes.

I am happy I get to play again but if I were still solely a GM I would be ok with that.

Something else:

Pre-covid: Exclusively GM.
During covid: Exclusively player, with different groups from pre-covid era.
Post-Covid: I expect it will become exclusively GM again, as covid-era groups get busy with real world, and remote gaming fades.

With my regular johns, I run a game every third week with two other members of the group running the two weeks in between. With another group I'm in, I run pickup games at least once a week right now and play in one.

It's an embarrassment of D&D riches.

I used to be mostly DM with a few one shots as a player. But more people have wanted to try their hands at DMing campaigns so lately (last 3ish years) I've actually been a player more than a DM. It's been fun but now I've got a bunch of stuff that I want to run sitting on the back burner. I need my kids to get older so I can make game nights with people whose schedules I control.

Ive been exclusively DMing since 5E came out. Before that I probably DMed 75%/player 25% in previous editions. In 2021 another player stepped and DMed and I got to play but that didnt last long, so Im once again the sole DM.
