My campaign is 2E, although I shamelessly borrow and steal material from all editions. My campaign has been going for so long (since 1980, continuous, all in the same world plotted all on the same timeline), there are so many different PC groups, so many complex plot threads with so many NPCs, and some of the characters are high enough level that any attempt to convert the campaign to any other edition would both take years (and I already don't have enough spare time to do what I want with my campaign) and would sooooo change the PCs and NPCs from what they are now and what their history has made them today as to be unrecognizable.

Face it, as nice as 3.xEd may (or may not) be... Converting a 15th+ PC or NPC produces a completely different character with completely different skills and abilities. For my campaign, its just not worth it. Your mileage may vary.

I started playing a Chainmail Fantasy campaign in 1971 (still occasionally dust it off), switched the campaign over to OD&D in 1974 and it continues to this day. Also have played some Holmes, BX and BECMI/Rules Cyclopedia. Have an OAD&D campaign also. Since campaign started in 1971 we are now at over 2700 gaming sessions of average 14 hours each and counting.

I find it depressing that some people feel the need to tout the 'superiority' (in their eyes) of 3e over earlier versions, even though the original poster made it clear that that is not the subject of this thread or poll.
Insecurity? ;) :p

Missed this thread the first time around. Currently playing in a 1E AD&D campaign that's been running for about 2 1/2 years (the core members came together through Dragonsfoot, but we've recruited additional members from "real life" as well). For the last 2 sessions I've been running the party through The Abduction of Good King Despot (one of my favorite modules) while our regular DM has been out sick. If I had my druthers we'd be playing OD&D (at least when I'm in the DM chair) but the other players all seem to prefer 1E (for whatever misguided reasons :p ;) ).

i mayself no loner play the older editons played only 1 game of 1e and lots of 2e but mine a lot of the 2e stuff . planescape and darksuns being among my faves . still have all my books and i think its great that some folks are still enjoying the older ed's. to each his on after all

I like all of the incarnations of D&D as I find they all have their various charms. I prefer the older stuff 1e AD&D and earlier with 1e AD&D being the one I most prefer. 1e is the one I find myself gaiming in the most.

EDIT: There is no option for "Not playing pre-3e D&D." Simply because I assume the vast majority of you aren't! ;) I'm just curious to see how many *are*.

So you are just assuming that all the thousands of members who do not vote are all 3.x players? Fine by me, but hardly a good representation.

I'm always a little uncomfortable with this kind of poll. I only get to play one night a week. (With the inevitable cancellations, that probably is something like 40 nights a year.) We've played D&D3e, d20 Star Wars, MSH, Coda LotR, a homebrew, classic Traveller, classic D&D, Toon, & I've certainly left out a few. Campaigns can last up to a year. So what we happen to be playing now (which happens to be classic D&D) isn't really representative of anything.

I play all versions of D&D, simultaneously. That is one of the many cool things about Castles and Crusades. I have every edition of D&D and now I can use them as I like. I do primarily pull from 2E, though. Some from 1E and 3E and 3 "house rules" from OD&D. Magic Items and Spells I can pretty much use from any edition. Same with monster types. Plus I have always allowed intelligent monsters to have character classes, with no race/class restrictions or race/class level restrictions for elves, dwarves, and such.

If the player was willing to come up with a "believeable" back story as to why their dwarf or Elf was a paladin, or their dwarf was a Wizard, I allowed it.
