Hi everyone!

I’m new to the forums and thought I’d start by asking about everyone’s first encounter with D&D. Whether it was a memorable character, a hilarious moment with friends, or your introduction to the Forgotten Realms, I’d love to hear your stories.

For me, my very first character was a Ranger(?) elf in Neverwinter Nights (PC)(2002). She dual-wielded two longswords (because why not go full style for a first character, right?). That was also my very first glimpse into D&D and the Forgotten Realms—it completely hooked me on the lore and adventures of this world.

Searching now for NWN’s portraits, I think I had picked this one, with the second one being a bit of a crush back in the day:

Neverwinter Nights - Nyatar

Later, when I started playing around the table with friends, (edit: ) I think I was an elf warrior.

How about you? What was your first character, or how did you discover the world of D&D?

Not my first character but Ive played Orbril since 1998, seriously since 2001 through a variety of game systems starting as a young gnome setting out to become an apprentice alchemist, then through his entire career as alchemist, rat catcher, adventuring geologist, Giant Hamster Wrangler, Bandit hunter, Master of the Circus Maximus, Hero of the Empire, Applied Agri-Alchemical researcher, Falcon rider, Professor of Applied Alchemy and Pyrotechnics, Elder gnome and Guest of the Fairie Queen (retired). He's been in semi retirement since 2019 but is still an occasional NPC

First character: Dumystor Danara, crown prince of his (off-world) realm.

Started playing him in 1982. Last played him in about 1996; he's now permanently retired on a non-magical world (fortunately he's Human, thus the lack of magic doesn't kill him).

First time I played was BECMI (with some house rules) and the only character I could play was a Dwarf because we had to roll ability scores in order and each class had ability scores requirements, and I think I didn't qualify for anything else.

Don't remember, but it was probably an elf from BECMI. I've had a number of characters over the years and now that I've lost/thrown out my old ringbinders and notebooks, the memory of those old characters has disappeared with them.

My first 5e character was Jalt Torrin, a Dragonborn Fighter (Scout variant). He was born and raised in the town of Ruinspoke, a frontier village in Tymanther. After two years being a member of Tymanther's Lance Defenders, he was promoted to Lance Scout and sent out to explore the world outside of his home nation. He wound up being 'drafted' by a member of the Flaming Fists mercenary group outside of Baldur's Gate and found himself working alongside a party of arcane scale-less folk (almost everyone else in the party was some kind of arcane spellcaster😋) to help bring back the city of Elturel from Hell.

I discovered D&D back in the 80's when I came across 1e's Monster Manual in a hobby store. I got to play 2e back in college and collected 2e and 3e books for several years.

Actual first would be in Baldurs Gate 1:

A human fighter. That’s all I recall about him.

Tabletop:

2E Human Fighter named Vaxxal. Dual wielded swords. He was a fisherman who longed to marry a mermaid.

He died via Power Word Kill from a Death Knight in the final assault of the big bads castle
