Why do you write your e-mail address differently?

I'm just curious, as I've seen a number of times here, that people don't use the '@' and '.' when posting their e-mail addresses.

I always write mine as myself@domainname.com, but I'll see people write it instead: myself (at) domainname (dot) com, or some variation of that.

What is the difference?

There is software that scans bulletin boards and other postings on the internet looking for e-mail addresses automatically. By not writing it with the "@" and the ".net" it is more difficult for them to locate the e-mails and deliver more spam.

I posted on email of mine on these boards a couple years ago in normal format. Within a few days, I got my first spam to that address (it was a unique email address--not my normal one). Within probably a month, I was getting 10-20 spams per day.

I won't make that mistake twice.

I've heard, though, that the bots are getting smarter, so that writing an email like me at whatever dot com isn't necessarily safe, either.

Bots. I go so far as to say "I use the same handle on Yahoo! mail." Which should be clear enough -- I think.
