[WOT Adventure] OOC Thread 2

More Blademasters

For defense, you could give the Blademaster Armor Compatibility, or you could give him a higher defense, although you would need a +7 progression for it to be as good as Armor Compatibility.

As for Parting the Silk, I could think of all sorts of alternatives. Rather than giving max damage, you could let him roll the damage die twice and take the highest (like the Dark One's Own Luck, but for damage die). This could apply to every attack, or just the first one to connect each round, rather than an x times per day thing. Alternatively, you could give an extra attack per round with a -2 penalty to all attacks (like Quick Shot, but with swords). You could give him Power Attack as a free feat. Or you could do Superior Weapon Specialization (which may or may not be a 3rd ed feat, but I've seen it mentioned a few times at Wizards), which has Superior Weapon Focus and Weapon Specialization as pre-reqs and gives +1 to hit and +1 to damage. You could also give Improved Critical, but I think that's already a benefit of Blademaster.

Wouldn't armor compatibility carry over from my Armsman class to the Blademaster PrC, and thus even up the Defense of the Warder and the Blademaster a little? Assuming I get 3 levels of Armsman, of course...

Maybe I'll cook up a Blademaster PrC that I think fits with the novels. But I've got class from 6-9pm tonight, so we'll see.

To help with this, I'm going to list some adjectives/clauses that I believe pertain to all Blademasters, and create some abilities that relate to these descriptions.

-Skilled
-Reactive
-Fast
-Hard to hit
-Confident
-Focused
-Stoic
-Good balance
-Graceful

Feel free to add any other descriptions to the list. I gotta go do some homework now, but I'll probably end up working on this PrC late tonight.

As far as I understand it, Armsman Armor Compatibility only applies to the Armsman defense bonus. Otherwise, 1) There wouldn't be much point to the Warder's Armor Compatibility, since most Warders come from Armsman anyway, and 2) Everyone would take one level of Warrior, since it comes with Armor Compatibility at 1st level, and burn it all, Warrior's not supposed to be a Hero class.

Not exactly. You'd have Armor Compatibility for Defense gained from your Armsman levels, but not for Defense gained from your Blademaster levels. So you can either get some use out of Defense from heavy armor or Defense from being a Blademaster, but not both. Warders, OTOH, grant an armor-compatible increase to Defense.

Note to the players

I'm probably going to finish up the combat scene after work today. Since I'm going to be out of town from tomorrow night until Sunday, figure on a little over three days without posts from GM. You'll manage.

I get the most disturbing feeling that Sirsei is going to get kicked out of the Tower before she ever has an opportunity to reject Sisterhood. At least a grudge is an interesting character relationship mechanic.

[OOC: I'd just like to point out that Ash couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag. How he lasted this long on the streets of Ebou Dar is a mystery to me. That level of Armsman sure looks inviting.....]

You know Ash, if your next level is in Wilder, your fighting skills aren't going to improve. However, I wouldn't spend more than 3 levels outside of Wilder if you want to be able to cast level 9 weaves eventually.

By the way, you may want to see if Dave will let you take Air as an Affinity. I know it's counter to the rules, but since you don't want people finding out you're a wilder yet, it may be best to be able to cast weaves that aren't too obvious. Arms of Air and Harden Air can be used subtly. I can't say the same for most of the Fire affinity weaves.

blademaster attempt

This is based on the Duelist from Sword and Fist, with some tweaks taken from the rulebook Blademaster and the Warder. I haven't completely throught this out, so it'll probably need revision, but here goes nothing.

One note here: I think Composure is supposed to represent the Flame-and-Void technique, which is why it figures so centrally in the pre-reqs for this class.

Requirements
-BAB +6
-Composure: 3 ranks
-Balance: 5 ranks
-Feats: Dodge, Weapon specialization (any sword), mobility, skill emphasis(composure)

Hit dice: d8

Class skills: Balance(Dex), Composure (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (weaponry) (Int), Listen (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), and Tumble (Dex)

Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier

Code:
[COLOR=#ffffcc]
lev bab fort ref will def rep special
-------------------------------------------
  1 +1 +0 +2 +0 +0 +1 Blademaster Defense
  2 +2 +0 +3 +0 +0 +0 Blademaster strike +1d6
  3 +3 +1 +3 +1 +1 +1 Enhanced mobility
  4 +4 +1 +4 +1 +1 +0 Defensive Awareness
  5 +5 +1 +4 +1 +1 +1 Eyes of the Crane
  6 +6 +2 +5 +2 +2 +0 Blademaster strike +2d6
  7 +7 +2 +5 +2 +2 +1 Superior Weapon Focus
  8 +8 +2 +6 +2 +2 +0 Spring attack
  9 +9 +3 +6 +3 +3 +1 Improved Critical
 10 +10 +3 +7 +3 +3 +0 Blademaster strike +3d6
[/COLOR]

Abilities:
Defensive Awareness, Superior Weapon Focus: As per Warder

Eyes of the Crane: As per the rulebook Blademaster

Blademaster Defense: When not wearing armor, Blademasters add their Wisdom bonus (if any) to their Defense while weilding a melee weapon. If caught flat-footed or otherwise denied his dexterity bonus, he also loses this bonus.

Blademaster strike: At 2nd level, the blademaster gains the ability to find openings in defense and gaps in their armor, gaining a bonus 1d6 damage to his normal damage roll. Blademaster strike does not work against creatures immune to critical hits for any reason. Every four levels, he increases the additional damage by +1d6.

Enhanced mobility: When unarmored, the blademaster gains an additional +4 to Defense against attacks of opportunity caused when he moves out of or within a threatened area.

I agree that the Dark One's Own Luck doesn't really fit flavor-wise.

You did mean Hummingbird kisses the honey rose rather than the heron spreads its wings, right? You don't require whirlwind attack...

I like the abilities, the extra d6 definitely give this Blademaster a punch. 4 skill points is nice too. And I definitely agree that Composure is part of being a Blademaster.

I have two problems though:

1. d8 hit dice? Ouch! It's still a fighting class, right?

2. I think the requirements are actually too easy to get. How many bonafide Blademasters have we seen in the novels? Less than a dozen, and with the importance of the main characters, you'd think they'd see more than their fair share. Yes, three feats makes it equal to the Warder's feat prereqs, but it takes away a lot of the prestige of the prestige class.

Yuri would like to step in and point out that he'd prefer the original Duelist canny defense that uses Int instead of Wis, but he's metagaming...
