The Untamed Wilds: Caravan Campaign

Sannit looks for a clear track so he can know what river otter tracks look like while Bolo sends calming vibes to the nursing mother before they move on.

GM: The actual print for a river otter looks almost identical to a raccoon, 5 toes on the front, 4 on the back. The main difference is the sliding. After creating a slick path, an otter propels its on body like a sled and always drags its tail. A raccoon carries its body aloft.

Before she leaves Bolo attempts to reach out to one of the otter pups with way, not to take it away from its mother, but attempting to form the beginnings of a bond for whenever the animal is ready to move on.

OOC: It might be cool to have an otter for a pet, ranger style.

GM: Bolo makes a successful animal lore check:
Though it is possible to make a pet of an otter, it cannot be tamed and will kill every chicken in town and also raid the food supplies even when not hungry. This particular animal is even worse behaved than raccoons.

GM: +1 XP Bolo.

Day 17: Investigating the Hollow of Bones: Evening Day 1

OOC: After calming the mother otter, the party returns to the south side of the river, reloads the pack animals, and continues on upstream. The remainder of the afternoon is uneventful, and the party stops to make camp for the night, following the usual routine of tasks.

GM: Anything specific or out of the ordinary please state intentions.

Day 18: Investigating the Hollow of Bones: Day 2

OOC: The night is uneventful and no one shows any particular interest in any specific tasks. The pack animals are loaded and the party continues upstream, breaking for lunch.

GM: State any specific intentions or actions.

When the party breaks for lunch, Merin will once again sit down and meditate, trying to locate lizards by looking into the "Wayspace."

OOC:
Is that term ok? I figured that since you said detecting things with Way involves observation rather than manipulation, there should be a term for it. You could call it looking into the "Wayspace," and imagine it as your "spiritual" or "virtual" self, floating or flying through the Way, and observing things as you go. It would be a similar concept to being able to float or fly through Outer Space, and making observations. Except this is not done with the physical body, but rather, using the psyche. What are your thoughts on this?

GM: The term is perfectly acceptable. You may eventual here it referred to as "the aether".

San-Bolo take a trip to the river for more panning. Bolo sits bored watching Sannit dig through the river mud for anything interesting and gets an idea. She picks up some of the small bits of metal he has set aside and practices heating them, then intentionally cooling them. She puts them down and holds her hands at different distances, seeing if she can gauge a proper range.

OOC: My intention is to determine if Bolo can infuse her arrowheads with energy as she is drawing and shooting them so that it will not take an extra step and add an extra damage property to her ranged attacks.

GM: Bolo finds no difficulty in heating things. This gives her encouragement. What disappoints her is that she can, as yet, only heat what she is touching. She is also disappointed to find that the heat given any metal dissipates almost immediately. I will clarify this further in my post.

As San-Bolo make their way toward the river, Merin seats himself in his lotus position allowing his consciousness to expand, examining the flux of way in the area.

Sheldon, thinking he would like to try the same thing, walks 8 paces due south away from the river and seats himself in a servile warrior position, instead of lotus. Indigo accompanies him to keep guard.

GM: Merin is more familiar this time with entering a meditative state. He understands grand and over movement comes first followed by ever decreasing fluctuation. The river follows a way line as is expected. The standard weather crosses it at an angle from NW to SE at this time of year. Rain is apparently coming within a day indicating an end to the dry season. The river is teeming with small life, and there is a ore vein buried under its base, but it is too deep to be accessible.

Medium sized animals come from the south on a regular basis to drink here. Merin thinks coyotes or jackals. Three things catch Merin's attention in particular. There appears to be a repetitive pulse of way coming from upstream, though he cannot understand its significance. There is a minor disturbance of direct manipulation coming from the riverbank, which he recognized as Bolo causing destructive inference to create heat, and there is a sink in the way lines being created to his right just at the edge of his range, which he identifies as Sheldon engaging in the same process as he.

Merin stands and stretches. He sees Sheldon and Indigo returning from south. He sees San-Bolo at the river to the north. Approaching Bolo he indicates that he recognizes what she is trying since he has attempted it before and conveys that what he found was while metal readily took the heat, it would not retain it, and that stone or crystal once heated would retain the energy for some time; therefore, he too was hoping to find suitable stone or crystal to make arrowheads.

Sheldon and Indigo join the others at the river. Sheldon conveys what information he thought he had determined. He confirms Merin's comments to Bolo. He thought he might have detected the pulsating ripple, but being further away, he was unsure. Different from Merrin, he said there were several small disturbances in the balance to the east of where he was seated. He thinks it is a group of small animals disturbing the ground, rooting like pigs but smaller than raccoons.

GM: Sannit finds 2 pieces of quatrz, 1 ingot of copper and 2 ingots of tin

Sannit holds up the dirty piece of copper with a triumphant grin. "That's what we're looking for."

Bolo gets an inquisitive look on her face as she absorbs the information provided by her group mates. "But why does the metal not hold the heat? If the energy is infused in the metal it should retain it the same as if heating it by a fire. And what about cooling the material? Shouldn't it be the opposite process for heating and therefore simple?"

Merin says,

"I'd like to wander upstream, and check out the unidentifiable ripple in the Way. It could be another Way user, and if it is, I'd like to ascertain their level of hostility."

Tor nods in agreement, and says, "I am with you."

Day 18: Investigating a Ripple

OOC: Neither Merin nor Sheldon can explain why the metal will not retain the heat, they only know that it doesn't. As for cooling it, the heat once generated is real and must be sent somewhere to cool the object. With metal the heat is lost to the atmosphere in seconds on its own. With something like a campfire with logs burning, the heat can be manipulated to leave the fire. Having it enter the air or the ground, extinguishes the flame.

OOC: Ignoring the small disturbance to the south, the party packs the animals to continue onward upstream, being headed that direction anyway, to see what it might be to this pulsating ripple in the way.

The land is very slightly hilly, but as the party continues a short distance of about 8 paces, a natural rock wall about a step or so in height blocks the path, also creating a small waterfall in the river. Diverting to the south until a place can be reached where the pack animals can continue east only takes a few minutes. Following the rocky ledge back to the river, the party discovers that the top of the fall holds a rather deep looking pool that is bordered on it upper end by another natural rock wall.

Merin thinks that this pool holds the source of the disturbance he was sensing. The water is clear and cool. All its edges are steep and rocky rather than sloped soil. It is not possible to see more than about an arm's length into the water despite its clarity. Staring into the depth for a while, there appears to be something glowing, like something phosphorescent down deep in the water.

San-Bolo look from the pool to each other and Sannit shrugs. Bolo turns to the other way users and says, "Perhaps we should link and investigate this pool with way before jumping in."

Bolo suddenly turns her head to look at the pool in alarm. "No, something is wrong here. We should be very cautious. I think the glow is bait and something is waiting for us to enter the pool."
