Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will be directing the film which features "an ensemble cast and take a subversive approach to the game."

A Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven D&D movie? Something like 13 Assassins? I could tooooootally be about that movie.

So few cast members have been revealed so far. I wonder if that means they are keeping some more big names secret for now, or if the rest of the cast are basically all unknowns? I can't decide if that is good or bad.

When they say "subversive approach," they mean tone, i.e. like Guardians of the Galaxy, not Zach Snyder's work.

When I read the word Subversive my immediate thoughts is to tell Rian Johnson to take a running jump!
I seriously hope its more decent Guardians of the Galaxy rather than anything resembling the mess of episode 8!
Despite people panning them even the Jeremy Irons D&D movie had some good bits mostly his scenes and Bruce Payne but they did get Bruce in the sequel but not sure what they were thinking in the third movie mind you...
I'm trying to think about something positive about this, what was the name of the Peter Dinklage movie Knights of Badassdom?
Is that reaching too far in expectations?

We are not yet at the point with fantasy movies where we'll get the Scary Movie or Not Another Teen Movie parodies.

"Subversive" almost certainly means it won't be humorless and grim like most of Game of Thrones and the Witcher were. (And yes, the LotR movies had lightness in them, but Return of the King is 18 years old and not part of the current zeitgeist.)

I hope the movie is about the game, rather than just characters in a D&D setting. Maybe "subversive approach to the game" just means the story will be somewhat "meta," perhaps in a similar vein as The Princess Bride film.
Playing up hit points or ability scores as actual things in the world. Or retconning an in-game event "because the die landed on the bag of fritos." Or maybe a conflict between the players and their PCs.

That worked well for the Lego Movie (which wonderful, even for adults, for folks who didn't see it or the equally good Lego Batman Movie), but I'm not sure the mechanics are compelling or universal enough for a D&D film.

5 or 6 is a lot for both good and bad characters? Not for something like this, which should have a fairly large cast of core characters. Sure, it may not be as large as the Fellowship, but I doubt it is about a lone adventurer. Or are you expecting this to be like Conan, where the main character runs around solo, while picking up a temporary companion or two on his adventures?

No I'd like a group of 5-6 people around a gaming table with one DM and players.
Perhaps a bit of back story with a previous campaign that ended badly due to one player turning the others against a rival.
A new game is set up perhaps a new DM whose unaware of the animosity and recruits most of the old group or maybe there are two new players instead and during the game it comes to a head where they talk about their issues and its when the two newbies point out that neither could have bene responsible that they start recognising they were played by someone they thought was a mutual friend.
Perhaps lead into a larger game and rather than team up with their former friend they reveal they've made up and demonstrate what they've learned with their new friends showing up to support them?
No it won't be anything like that!
Probably atypical fantasy adventure playing safe as they seem to do these days.
