The cast includes some Hollywood heavyweights -- Chris Pine, Rege Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, and others. The release date was announced back in August:

‘Dungeons & Dragons’ reboot movie has officially wrapped up filming today (Aug. 19) in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Director John Francis Daley confirmed via his Twitter account. The film is currently set to be released on March 3, 2023.

Starring Chris Pine in the leading role, Paramount’s upcoming action fantasy movie officially began filming on April 29, with the cast and crew of around 60-70 people. The movie was also filmed reportedly in Iceland for a week or two.

Jonathan Goldstein is co-directing and writing the script for the film with John Francis Daley. Jeremy Latcham is producing through his deal with studio eOne, Hasbro’s entertainment arm. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner is also producing. Other producers also include Stephen Davis, Roy Lee, Courtney Solomon, and Allan Zeman. Denis L. Stewart is serving as executive producer.

Dungeons & Dragons is an upcoming American fantasy adventure film based on the RPG of the same name and a reboot of the film series of the same name. The plot details of the film are still kept under the wraps.

The film stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Hugh Grant, Chloe Coleman, Jason Wong, Daisy Head, and Sophia Lillis. Regé-Jean Page is known for Shonda Rhimes’s wildly popular Bridgerton on Netflix, the actor wrapped his part in the first week of August. In December 2020, Chris Pine was cast to star in the film, he is reportedly getting $11.5 Million to star in this film. Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Hugh Grant, and Sophia Lillis joined the cast in the following months, with Grant cast as the antagonist, Forge Fletcher, and Lillis as Doric. My Spy star Chloe Coleman along with Jason Wong and Daisy Head also joined the ensemble cast. Wong is playing Dralas.

The cast also includes Nicholas Blane, Dan Poole, Barry O'Connor, Adrian Christopher, and Lati Gbaja.

Even before production started, the film had undergone numerous changes. The film was first announced by Warner Bros. in 2013 and then moved to Paramount in 2017. The film's release date has also changed significantly; it was originally scheduled for July 23, 2021. The release date was then pushed back to May 27, 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and then to November 19, 2021, to accommodate the release of Mission: Impossible 7. The release date was pushed back to March 3, 2023, earlier this year (current release date).

Dungeons & Dragons is a leading fantasy entertainment franchise, fueled by the imagination of storytellers around the world. More than 40 million fans have interacted with or played D&D since it was first published 46 years ago.

Or anywhere, from what I can tell.

I hope this doesn't seem truculent on my part; I'm not trying to pick a fight. I just think that "what really happened" ideas should be verified rather than taken at face value.
Okay, it started to bug me (not your questioning, but the idea itself), so I started to try and search for some other source than my own memory . . . . and I can't find anything either.

Perhaps I am misremembering, certainly with no other info that corroborates the idea, that seems likely. But it's such a strong memory . . . . oh well. If I'm right, it's certainly obscure trivia.

It's possible you were conflating the Buck Rogers licensing self-dealing with the D&D movie. There was definitely some nepotism going on there.

Or it's possible that your brain created a rational explanation for how a 19 year old kid with no experience in filmmaking could somehow get the film license to D&D for what appears to be all time. I would honestly really like to know the story of how that actually happened because it makes zero sense that something worth that much money would just be handed over like that, even with the mismanagement that TSR was historically known for.

"Gygax's interview with Sacco further illustrates the connection between Lorraine Williams and the Dungeons & Dragons film:

Her brother, Flint Dille, was a friend of mine. He and I had co-authored four multi-path fantasy adventure game books and he was the co-creator of the film script mentioned earlier. Thus I had met his sister, Lorraine, her husband Jim and considered her a trustworthy person.
Flint Dille, co-creator of the Dungeons & Dragons film script, was brother to Lorraine Williams, CEO of TSR. Solomon was friends with Dille, and that was Solomon's opening to claim the Dungeons & Dragons movie rights. TSR would have second thoughts about this agreement."

Immediately the title reminds me of that picture in the 1E DMG; so that's good. The number of producers and the wildly differing release dates? Not so great.

Fingers crossed that it's good.

Man, Flint Dille. I have such mixed feelings about him. This only adds to the mix.

This is it, I must have confused Williams relationship with Dille with her relationship with Solomon.

Still, it's nepotism, if once removed. And an interesting lesson on the disaster that Hollywood can be, and that TSR most certainly was.

In a sense, despite still being connected to the franchise . . . Solomon was screwed too. Over a decade of his life, being forced to abandon his initial plans for worse ideas, and being known in D&D fandom forever for making that movie . . . .

Apparently it really is who you know, rather than what you know.

On a tangential note, the idea that Flint Dille co-wrote the script of the D&D movie we got back in 2000 seems wrong also, because as far as I can tell, the script that Dille wrote (together with Gary Gygax, according to the original interview quoted on that Patreon page) was for a D&D movie being pitched in the early 80s, when Gygax was in Hollywood. Given that a lot of writing took place leading up to the Sweatpea D&D movie being released, it seems unlikely that the Gygax/Dille script was the one used for the final product.

...then again, Solomon claims that he was "forced to use" an older script, without specifying if he meant one of his earlier drafts (there were apparently sixteen, according to him) or the original Gygax/Dille script (though I suspect the former).

March 3rd? Just in time for March 4th -- GM's Day! :)
Don't like the world "thieves" in the title, very bad connotations. Much rather like "Rogues".
Yeah, but the aphorism they are invoking is "there is no honor among thieves."
Maybe we should check Ancestry.com?
IIRC, you can't look up the details of living persons on Ancestry unless they give you a certain level of permissions to view their family tree.

Interesting... are we getting a thieves' guild as the central faction? I like that it's not just 'D&D: The Movie' and feels like part of a greater whole.
And the title is a reference to a fairly memorable line from the original movie. Protagonist (that was his name, right?) is angry at the delightfully creepy and shifty leader of the thieves guild has double crossed him, and incredulously asks “what about honor among thieves!?” Only to be laughed at by the whole building before…Valdemar…I think…comes in with his goons and wrecks house indiscriminately.

I couldn’t be more excited 😂
