But, give me the crunchy solid cookie which I have to dip in the milk to eat! :D
Out of curiosity, why aren't you playing something like 3.5 or Pathfinder? Those would probably be the crunchiest options within the D20 family. Is there something you don't like about them, or is it just that 5E is currently the biggest game in town?

I want Skill Challenges and Minions back.

I mean, I already have them back in my own games. I just want them officially back.
I do not thing we need minions back.

1st level fighter with heavy crossbow and archery style is great minion for lots of levels.

+7 attack and 1d10+3 ranged damage, have them in lots of numbers and they are a threat.

I've used them in my games, they're good and I guess I'd like to see official rules, but what I've got works so I'm not too fussed. It might be a little weird, things that I want to see and things that I've had to create myself aren'talways equal. I'd be fine if they don't create minion rules, just because what I have works for me.

Bounded accuracy was supposed to fix that.

However if you don't optimize for damage, you don't reliably deal the damage to kill 2-4 HD monsters

That's the problem.

You need the highest dice weapons or optimized feats to OHKO mooks.

5e weapon and cantrips attacks desk too little damage to work for minions.

Sure, if you really want them to be 100% one hit kill.
But you can make them with 8 CON.
9 HP is not a lot. And it gives a good difference between light and heavy weapons against them.

Yeah, I just think that design philosophy (of 5E) is simply being lazy really. 🤷‍♂️
For me, the issue is: is a haiku 'lazy' because I prefer an hundred page epic poem? Minimalist paintings? Those '5 ingredient' recipe books? Setting out to do something with a confined scope doesn't equate to lazy. Mind you, 'the <creators> intended it to be that way' is not a dodge of critique, and said minimalist thing can be (subjectively) genuinely bad, but that's a different beast than lazy.
