D&D (2024) Sorcerer (Playtest 7)

  • It's good that they've dialed back the custom class spells.
  • Both Aberrant and Clockwork are unexpected subclasses. It's nice they've included one of the pseudo-psionic subclasses. Were these met with an enthusiasm that I had missed?
  • Dragon. The change to Dragon Speech (level 3) gives you knowledge of Draconic, but you can't understand dragons if they are communicating to you in another language. This is pretty subtle tweaking for what is essentially a ribbon ability. (Am I missing something?).
  • I can't help but be disappointed with the reversion to class spell lists. There was such potential here to let the class choose which spell list it wanted, like they had given to the Bard. All of a sudden, there are Divine Sorcerers built-in without needing a subclass, and Primal ones, each of which would have played differently with Metamagic. I know not everyone is sad, but for me I will be mourning the Sorcerer that never was but could have been.

Clockwork & Psionic Soul was included because it was less work for them, just point to Tasha's, Divine Soul is FAR more iconic then Clockwork, but it and Shadow Magic were pre Tasha's so meant potentially more work to update (although besides allowing Divine Souls to use Holy Symbols as a focus they didn't need much updating between the changes to Sorcerers, Cleric Spells, and Ritual Casting being innate to ritual spells).

Also to be fair Aberrant Soul is the closest thing to an actual Psion class in the game so it makes sense to put it in.

The top 3 iconic sorceries in D&D is Draconic Ancestor, Wild Magic, and Favored Soul. Favored Soul didn't make the 2014 but was put it XTGE as Divine Soul as it was iconic.

This put it in a precarious position of being too iconic so it was released as early expansion but deigned too early to be easily converted to the new rules and released not in the PHB to be required as a conversion.

I love the magic rage thing. Feels like an avatar state for the class which is really on theme.

I'm so disappointed with draconic sorcery though. It's just a bland bunch of nothingness no better than the 2014 version. How did we lose draconic exhalation for this?

I'd like to see subclasses getting features which play into their magic rage.

I'm going to push in survey for them to replace Clockwork with Divine Soul, I love Clockwork, but Divine Soul like Favoured Soul before it, is too iconic to get left out.

The new Twinned Spell resembles what Heighten Spell should do, but dump the restrictions on what spells it Xan add 1 level too, make Twinned Spell work like it used to, but level restrict it, so it only works on cantrips and up to say level 5 (or maybe 3rd if that is too much) spells. Even double the spell point per level cost, or still 1 for Cantrips. Rename the old Heighten Spell metamagic to Stubborn Spell, and reuse the name Heighten Spell for the +1 Spell level effect, but without the single target restriction.

Oh and Transmute Spell should include Psychic like Sorcerous Burst does if they plan on including Aberrant Soul.

I just love the Idea of an Aberrant Soul casting a Psyhicball at a group of enemies.

Bonus points if it includes Radiant and Necrotic damage too.

Aberrant Soul makes me think of Kimmuriel Oblodra.
to me it was closest to 3.5e psion/wilder attempt at psionics.

1st level bonus feat(as most tables play it); Telekinetic
4th level, Bonus metamagic feat
8th level +2 CHA(for 20)

take mostly psychic damage spells, and fireball OFC.
Got option to use psychic damage from elemental metamagic from DM so that was cool.
