D&D (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #1: "Everything You Need To Know!"

Each day this week, Wizards of the Coast will be releasing a new live-streamed preview video based on the upcoming Player's Handbook. The first is entitled Everything You Need To Know and you can watch it live below (or, if you missed it, you should be able to watch it from the start afterwards). The video focuses on weapon mastery and character origins.

There will be new videos on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week, focusing on the Fighter, the Paladin, and the Barbarian, with (presumably) more in the coming weeks.

I’ll let my table decide on the graze weapon mastery…since it just says does damage on a miss….is it a miss within 1 to 5 and the dmg is 1 plus STR mod. May try a few ideas once I see rules in the book.

Seeing the art in the first 2 videos has me excited to see the new books and art, besides any rules updates.

Pick two skills and an origin feat, and make up a backstory for your character. If someone can't do that, how are they going to handle classes?

Honestly given you'd still have premade backgrounds for those that don't want to make their own, and that custom backgrounds are super basic and easy anyways, it just didn't make sense to me not to have it in.
Classes give you suggestions, which new players need.

can you be even more condescending to new players??
unless this is sarcasm, sometimes it translates poorly into written form...

only problem I have seen with new players is if we are starting at higher level and they chose to play casters.

if players can pick 2-4 skills from classes then they can pick 2 more from backgrounds
Bro I run for almost only new players. This is their words, not mine. Do not accuse me of bs, and check your biases at the door.

I mean, it seems reasonable to accuse you of "bs", actually. Your claim that all or most or some significant proportion of new players said custom backgrounds were "too hard" and "for veteran players" seems deeply implausible on the face of things. It's a bit "oppa homeless style", vibes-wise.

I feel like it's a bit more likely that you told new players that custom backgrounds were "too hard" for them and they, being new, simply nodded and agreed.

so they say them, but that does not make it actually true.

I can see them having to learn a lot of new stuff so picking something premade over rolling your own is just one less mental hurdle they have to deal with and they gladly run with that, delaying a custom background to when they have less mental overload and a better idea of what backgrounds are.

That does not mean that creating one is not dead simple and they easily could do so if they didn’t have 20 more important things to figure out at the same time…

asking people with no experience while they are under stress about how complex something is that they have no idea about sounds like a great way to get accurate answers :)

As I understand it, he’s saying that the Weapon Mastery rules are essentially the same as in UA Playtest 7. No new Mastery types, and no changes from how they work.
Also, the Vex Mastery Property has made a return. Crawford mentions it as an example min the Weapon Mastery video.

Oh well thank you for burnishing your street cred.

Mod Note:
Please find a more constructive way to engage with people than with snide and accusative personal comments. Thanks.

Anyone else want to jump on the disrespect train? 'Cuz the only station stop for it is gonna be "not in this conversation".
